DAY 6 OF 365

I have never lived on a farm, but experts say sheep and goats have certain similar traits. But one telltale difference is this: Goats are so independent that it is very difficult to lead them. Sheep, on the other hand, will follow their shepherd. Perhaps that is why Jesus used sheep to illustrate His relationship with His followers. He spoke of His loving relationship for the sheep because He died for them. He spoke of His living relationship because He cares for the sheep, and He spoke of a lasting relationship for the sheep because He keeps them. He made this latter point one day in the temple. John 10 relates how the religious leaders kept asking Him, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you do not believe me. The proof is what I do in the name of my Father. You don’t believe me because you are not a part of my flock. My sheep recognize my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them away from me. My Father has given them to me, and He is more powerful than anyone else. So no one can take them from me. The Father and I are one.” Jesus Christ offers to give us eternal life and be our Shepherd. He promises to guide us all during life and into eternity. The question we must answer is, “Am I willing to follow Him?”
