Many people, especially young people, live and die by wearing stylish clothes. They would not dare walk into school wearing outdated styles. Interestingly, the Apostle Paul uses clothes to convey a vital spiritual truth. He tells God’s people what they should take off and put on as followers of Jesus Christ. He urges us to wear the right spiritual clothes because the life we live sends a message to people around us. All through the letter to the Ephesians, he describes amazing blessings God gives to those who accept Jesus Christ. In response, he urges us to strive for unity and growth in Christ; we should model the Christian lifestyle before those who do not know Christ. He says they need our witness because they lack God’s values and God’s way of viewing reality. They tend to think only of themselves and of the here and now. They live only to satisfy their impure desires. Paul urges God’s people to discard that kind of attitude and actions. Instead, he urges us to put on the character traits of God who has given us a new nature. He explains that Christ, the source of all truth, calls us to live a new and different kind of life. This new life is possible because God’s Spirit lives those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. He teaches us to love God, to live righteous lives, to love others, and to treat them fairly. This kind of conduct shows we are really dressing in style.
