The Life of David

DAY 24 OF 28

Day 24: 2 Sam. 17 x Aiva Jenkins, Levite at UPPERROOM

"Good Advice."

"For the LORD had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom." (2 Samuel 17:14)

Now, we enter into a part of David's story that he isn't even present for, though he is at the center of its tension. Absalom, David’s son, is seeking advice from people who formally advised David. Former friends held in high regard, and even elders. They are now all advising Absalom on how to capture and kill David. In this rebellion led by Absalom, it appears as if everyone's loyalty has shifted, and all have forgotten the promise God made to David and Israel.

One man, whose word was held as high as prophecy, gives wise advice, but is full of his own intention. Another man, David's apparent ex-friend, gives advice that appeals to Absalom's vain ambition, and he is swayed by the way that he can look powerful. It doesn't turn out well if you know the end of the story. The end of this passage says, "The Lord determined (another version says decreed) that the first man's good advice would fail unto Absalom's defeat."

We live in a day where advice from "experts'' can be found everywhere: social media, commentaries, podcasts, etc. Though good, it is usually filled with opinions and interpretations. Good advice, great advice, even “expert” advice, is nothing compared to the word or decree of God.

Matthew 24:34-35 says, "Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."

It is important to intimately know and keep God's words and prophecies (also known as His plans) in our hearts. In times of indecision, transition, many counselors, good advice, and opposing advice, God’s words will be the foundation of how the Spirit leads us into all truth. Absalom's plans were in opposition to God, and so was his counselor's "good" advice. It is important to meditate daily on the words of God so that we might walk in clarity.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your unfailing promise. Thank You for Your words, which will not pass away without being fulfilled. You are faithful and true. Let Your word keep my heart clean. Teach me Your words so my heart will know the truth and walk in it. Put Your words in my heart and mind so they spill out in times of uncertainty. Let Your word be a light that guides my life by Your Spirit until You come. Amen.
