What Jesus Said About the Poor and Needy

DAY 4 OF 5

How to give and take care of people (Jesus, James the brother of Jesus and the Apostle John)

Matthew 6:2-4: So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be praised by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Luke 12:33: Sell your possessions and give to the poor.

Lukas 14:12-14: Then He said to the host who invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbours. Otherwise, they may invite you in return, and you will be repaid. But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

James 1:27: Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

1 John 3:17-18: If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?

Obedience: In what ways do your heart and acts towards people in need have to change? Is the Holy Spirit pointing out specific people to you? What steps will you take to obey the Word of God?

What Jesus Said About the Poor and Needy

We have poor people all around us. God is serious about the fact that the church needs to care for the poor - and we neglect it. This reading plan addresses that need.
