True Sweetness: 9 Days to Growing in the Fruit of the Spirit

DAY 4 OF 9

Healthy Portions

I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him." LAMENTATIONS 3:24 NIV

The two men stood side by side, surveying the vast expanse of land stretched out before them in all directions. Clearly, the portion of land watered by the large, winding river looked superior to the rest of the landscape. The lush vegetation and a bustling city lured Lot’s attention. “I’ll go there,” he decided, looking up at Abraham to see if he’d agree.

He did. By all appearances, Abraham had just lost his chance to claim the best land for his family and servants. Allowing Lot to choose first, he was relegated to whatever was left. While his nephew was delighted with the opportunity for the upper hand, Abraham seemed completely satisfied.

What was his secret? He had his sights set on something even greater: God Himself. His lack of selfish ambition signaled to God another display of true trust in God’s provision. “Do not fear,” God reassured Abraham. “I am your shield and your very great reward.” By waiting patiently for God, Abraham gained God’s promised protection, provision, and permanent friendship.

Seeking to serve oneself like Lot did isn’t just ancient history, though. It’s a sin that still permeates our culture, and if we’re not careful, it can poison us too. Not wanting to be outdone by others, we compete and work hard to secure the best of everything for ourselves and our families so that we can enjoy the good life. But God challenges us to let go of our perceived rights and the pursuit of worldly goods. In place of the best possessions and position, He promises to be all that we actually need. Abraham’s secret strength was truly knowing God. He hadn’t lost out. He’d won first prize!

Today, take note of the times you feel overlooked, lagging behind, or worried about the future. Like Abraham, look up to the Lord whose powerful presence stands right beside you, and wait patiently for Him. He will strengthen your heart and establish you for life.

Lord, You are the strength of my heart and my portion forever. I never want to run ahead of You or seek to forge my own way. I will wait patiently for Your direction because only You satisfy my soul. In Jesus's name. Amen.
