Insights From the Apostle Jude

DAY 3 OF 7

Days Of Noah And Lot

One of the signs for the Second Coming of the Lord is that it would be like that of the days of Noah and Lot. (Luke 17:28) Prophet Ezekiel provides additional information about Sodom. (Ezekiel 16:49) Jude confirms it: (Jude 1:7) From these verses, we can gather the political, economic, intellectual, social, and spiritual environment of those times.

1) Arrogance: There was no fear of God. Each person exalted himself over others. Demeaning others, discrediting others and denying the rights of others were evidence of their pride and conceit.

2) Violence: (Proverbs 4:17) There was no debate or discussion, and all issues were settled by violence. Street-level violence, lynching, mob violence, vigilante justice, and domestic violence were some forms of violence that was common.

3) Excess food: (overfed: eating and drinking). There was economic prosperity resulting in excess food. Different kinds of cuisine from different cultures have become popular. They became gluttons, resulting in obesity of the elite.

4) Marrying and giving in marriage: Divorces and remarriages were common. Today, we have live-in relationships added to many forms of so-called marriages.

5) Commercial activities: (buying and selling) Trade flourished. All aspects of life were equated with money. Services became commodities or products for sale. The exploitation of people to acquire as much as possible becomes the norm.

6) Building and planting: Building and creating assets, public buildings, and entertainment centres were multiplied; similar to the malls, food courts, and stadiums of today. However, Noah was building an ark, and no one noticed it. (Hebrews 11:7)

7) Luxury (prosperous ease): People loved comfort, luxury and ease of life. People were interested in entertainment, games, and revelry.

8) Tight fist – not generous: They were not concerned for the poor. Never did they share their excess with the downtrodden and oppressed.

9) Sexual immorality– unnatural desire: Homosexuality, lesbian relationships, threesomes and other unnatural sexual relationships became common.

10) Intentions of thoughts are continually evil (Genesis 6:5).The intelligentsia was unrighteous and had warped ideas. (Isaiah 5:20)

11) Boycotted preachers: Noah was called a "Preacher of righteousness" and did not get any fruit for 120 years. (II Peter 2:5) Enoch also was probably a contemporary living at that time who prophesized. (Jude 1:14)

12) Tormented righteous: (II Peter 2:7,8) There were not even ten righteous people in Sodom; hence it was destroyed. (Genesis 18: 32) Lot was tormented in his soul because of the behaviour of the citizens of Sodom.

Let us take note, be alert and always be prepared. Are you ready to meet your God?
