HOLINESS is being set apart by God to live differently than the world around us.

To be clear, holiness is completely a work of God in your life. He sets you apart instantaneously by saving you through the work of the gospel, then over time, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, you should begin to live differently. It’s an inside-out process; what’s on the inside should start becoming evident on the outside.

Peter, one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus, reminded his original audience (persecuted Christians in exile) of the truth of the gospel in their lives. The reason he reminded them of the gospel is because the gospel is the work of God in their lives that literally changed their identity. They were now “obedient children” (v. 14), and as children of the most high God, they could no longer live like they did as spiritual orphans. They had to live differently.

When we as believers fully grasp this truth, then we will see a movement of God begin to take place in our lives. The presence of God changes who we are before it changes what we do. The Holy Spirit will change your identity, and over time, He will begin to change your activity. It truly is a journey of learning about the holiness of God—how to be who He made you to be—which will translate into holy living.
