Call on the Helper
- Pastor Tyler Villines
“But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.” – John 15:26 (NLT)
Let me set the scene for you: My parents were dropping me off at college. As I was saying goodbye to them, I could hear my mission in my head the whole time: Develop friendships, work hard, and get my degree. I knew my mission, and I had my direction, but it didn’t change the fact that it was daunting and overwhelming.
Many times, we talk about the confusion of life. Not knowing what job you want to do, the college you wish to attend, places you want to live, etc. And yes, those are daunting and intimidating, but have you ever been precisely where you KNEW you needed to be: in the job, at the right college, in the right place, and still feel intimidated and confused? I want you to know that intimidation and confusion do not mean you are physically in the wrong place, but your eyes may be.
In Acts 1:1-11, we find the disciples in their most daunting moment. Jesus has been leading them for years at this point. He has been crucified, has risen from the tomb, and just before ascending, He tells them, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” They had their mission and location, yet they still wrestled with the confusion and intimidation. In Acts 2, everything changed when they received the Holy Spirit.
May I ask a difficult question? Have you let the Holy Spirit into your workplace, school, situations, or relationships?
Like the disciples, I bet everything will change when you allow the Holy Spirit to take over. With the Holy Spirit, you will have the help you need in the midst of where you are and what you are doing. John 15:26, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Helper! So, no matter what season you are in, you will be lost without the HELPER you need.
When you finally let Him in, you will see chaos in your mind turn to order, fear to boldness, and anxiety to peace. When you let Him in your situation, the atmosphere shifts. Just like in Acts 2, the people around you will recognize this. Not only will your life change, but it will change the lives of the people around you. Lean on Him, let the helper in, and watch Him activate the power of God in your daily life.
Make a Difference:
This week, start every day with Jesus. Whether on your commute to work or before you leave the house. Read a chapter, a Psalm, anything! Be intentional about asking the Holy Spirit to take over your day. Journal how you have seen Him move and how He has changed your mentality.
As You Read:
The same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead is available. On the day of Pentecost, which you’ll read about this week, you’ll see how the Holy Spirit gives us gifts to help us share the good news of Jesus!
