Christmas Unwrapped

DAY 1 OF 5

Don't Overcrowd Your Schedule

Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-16 - "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."

The Christmas season often arrives with a flurry of activities that can leave us feeling more frazzled than festive. It's a time when our calendars are as densely packed as the malls, brimming with events, gatherings, and the inevitable last-minute shopping trips. But during this holiday hustle, it's crucial to remember that a crowded schedule can lead to a cluttered mind and a weary heart. This season, let's strive to not just "do Christmas" but "Thrive Christmas."

In Ephesians 5:15-16, the Bible urges us to walk wisely, making the best use of our time. This wisdom isn't reserved for our daily routines but extends into our holiday planning. It's easy to get swept up in the tidal wave of holiday expectations, but it's wiser to pause and reflect on what we're rushing towards. Are we chasing after the perfect Christmas at the expense of our peace?

To avoid the trap of an overcrowded schedule, start by setting your priorities straight. Identify the non-negotiables of your Christmas. Is it the candlelight service on Christmas Eve, the quiet morning reading the Nativity story, or the precious hours spent with family? Once these cornerstones are in place, it becomes easier to say no to the less essential things that compete for our time.

Next, examine the traditions you uphold. Each family has customs, but sometimes, we cling to them out of habit rather than meaning. Ask yourself: Do these traditions bring joy and draw us closer to our loved ones and God, or have they become another task on an endless to-do list? Let go of certain customs if they no longer serve their purpose or detract from the season's true joy in the birth of Jesus.

It's also worth considering the expectations we set for ourselves. The pressure to create the perfect Christmas experience can be immense. We strive for the best decorations, the most memorable gifts, and the richest foods, but at what cost? The essence of Christmas isn't found in the grandeur of our celebrations but in the humble birth of Jesus Christ. We can find more significant space to reflect on this profound truth by simplifying our approach to the holidays.

Remember, it's more than how many events you attend or how packed your schedule is. It's about the moments of genuine connection and the quiet reflection on the miracle of Christ's birth. This Christmas, give yourself the gift of time—time to savor the moments, celebrate the season's true meaning, and worship in a way that renews your spirit.

As we approach this Christmas, let's challenge ourselves to be intentional with our time. Let's embrace the stillness as much as the celebrations, the quiet conversations as much as the caroling. In doing so, we may find that the best Christmas isn't filled with the most activities but with the most presence—ours and God's.

Reflection Questions:

  • What activities or commitments can you let go of this Christmas to make room for what truly matters?
  • How can prioritizing your schedule around God's guidance bring peace into your holiday season?

Challenge:

Choose one event or commitment you planned for this Christmas season and evaluate its importance. If it doesn't add to the joy or the true meaning of the season, consider letting it go.
