Real Hope: Character of GodSample

The Waiting Father
How we perceive God shapes or misshapes our journey of faith. Some might see Him as a cosmic CEO, micromanaging the universe with an eye to proper efficiency. He is the God of the grinding demand. Others might see Him as a purse-lipped individual constantly disapproving of His creation. Nothing or no one is ever good enough. Then again, He might be perceived as a kindly grandfather figure – one who indulges our every wish and winks at our every mistake.
Our perceptions of God can be formed by our early childhood experiences within our families. Or by unbalanced teaching that uses selective Bible texts to support a particular view. The best way to get a handle on God’s character is by looking at Jesus. God is like Jesus. This means He takes human failings seriously but loves those same human beings lavishly.
One very clear picture of God comes to us in the story of the lost son. When that prodigal came home, the door wasn’t slammed in his face. Nor did he get a stern lecture and a period on probation. He was compassionately embraced.
Our God is a Father who scans the horizon for the homecoming of His much-loved child. Our God longs to throw His arms around us and welcome us home.
