She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JER.3.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JER.3.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2KI.23.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8212;to follow the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2KI.23.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2KI.23.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2KI.23.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem&#8212;those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.23.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2KI.23.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the quarters where women did weaving for Asherah.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2KI.23.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.23.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the gateway at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which was on the left of the city gate. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.23.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Although the priests of the high places did not serve at the altar of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.23.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2KI.23.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">He desecrated Topheth, which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no one could use it to sacrifice their son or daughter in the fire to Molek. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.23.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">He removed from the entrance to the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">23:11 </span><span class="ft">The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain.</span></span></span><span class="content"> near the room of an official named Nathan-Melek. Josiah then burned the chariots dedicated to the sun.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.23.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.23.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">He pulled down the altars the kings of Judah had erected on the roof near the upper room of Ahaz, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts of the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. He removed them from there, smashed them to pieces and threw the rubble into the Kidron Valley. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.23.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The king also desecrated the high places that were east of Jerusalem on the south of the Hill of Corruption&#8212;the ones Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the vile goddess of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the vile god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the people of Ammon. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2KI.23.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Josiah smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles and covered the sites with human bones.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2KI.23.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.23.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Even the altar at Bethel, the high place made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin&#8212;even that altar and high place he demolished. He burned the high place and ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole also. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2KI.23.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2KI.23.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.23.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">The king asked, &#8220;What is that tombstone I see?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.23.17"><span class="content">The people of the city said, &#8220;It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.23.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2KI.23.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">&#8220;Leave it alone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Don&#8217;t let anyone disturb his bones.&#8221; So they spared his bones and those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2KI.23.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2KI.23.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Just as he had done at Bethel, Josiah removed all the shrines at the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria and that had aroused the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s anger. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2KI.23.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. Then he went back to Jerusalem.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2KI.23.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2KI.23.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">The king gave this order to all the people: &#8220;Celebrate the Passover to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2KI.23.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Neither in the days of the judges who led Israel nor in the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah had any such Passover been observed. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2KI.23.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> in Jerusalem.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2KI.23.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2KI.23.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. King Josiah marched out to meet him in battle, but Necho faced him and killed him at Megiddo. </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="2KI.23.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">Josiah&#8217;s servants brought his body in a chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jehoahaz King of Judah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="2KI.23.30"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="2KI.23.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. Now serve the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God and his people Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.35.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Prepare yourselves by families in your divisions, according to the instructions written by David king of Israel and by his son Solomon.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.35.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.35.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">&#8220;Stand in the holy place with a group of Levites for each subdivision of the families of your fellow Israelites, the lay people. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.35.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Slaughter the Passover lambs, consecrate yourselves and prepare the lambs for your fellow Israelites, doing what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> commanded through Moses.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.35.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.35.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Josiah provided for all the lay people who were there a total of thirty thousand lambs and goats for the Passover offerings, and also three thousand cattle&#8212;all from the king&#8217;s own possessions.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.35.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.35.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">His officials also contributed voluntarily to the people and the priests and Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah and Jehiel, the officials in charge of God&#8217;s temple, gave the priests twenty-six hundred Passover offerings and three hundred cattle. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.35.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Also Konaniah along with Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brothers, and Hashabiah, Jeiel and Jozabad, the leaders of the Levites, provided five thousand Passover offerings and five hundred head of cattle for the Levites.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.35.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.35.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">The service was arranged and the priests stood in their places with the Levites in their divisions as the king had ordered. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.35.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">The Passover lambs were slaughtered, and the priests splashed against the altar the blood handed to them, while the Levites skinned the animals. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.35.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">They set aside the burnt offerings to give them to the subdivisions of the families of the people to offer to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, as it is written in the Book of Moses. They did the same with the cattle. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.35.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">They roasted the Passover animals over the fire as prescribed, and boiled the holy offerings in pots, caldrons and pans and served them quickly to all the people. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.35.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">After this, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests, because the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were sacrificing the burnt offerings and the fat portions until nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the Aaronic priests.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.35.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.35.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The musicians, the descendants of Asaph, were in the places prescribed by David, Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun the king&#8217;s seer. The gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their posts, because their fellow Levites made the preparations for them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.35.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.35.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">So at that time the entire service of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was carried out for the celebration of the Passover and the offering of burnt offerings on the altar of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, as King Josiah had ordered. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.35.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">The Israelites who were present celebrated the Passover at that time and observed the Festival of Unleavened Bread for seven days. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.35.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">The Passover had not been observed like this in Israel since the days of the prophet Samuel; and none of the kings of Israel had ever celebrated such a Passover as did Josiah, with the priests, the Levites and all Judah and Israel who were there with the people of Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.35.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">This Passover was celebrated in the eighteenth year of Josiah&#8217;s reign.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Death of Josiah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.35.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2CH.35.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">After all this, when Josiah had set the temple in order, Necho king of Egypt went up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah marched out to meet him in battle. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2CH.35.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">But Necho sent messengers to him, saying, &#8220;What quarrel is there, king of Judah, between you and me? It is not you I am attacking at this time, but the house with which I am at war. God has told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me, or he will destroy you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2CH.35.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2CH.35.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Josiah, however, would not turn away from him, but disguised himself to engage him in battle. He would not listen to what Necho had said at God&#8217;s command but went to fight him on the plain of Megiddo.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2CH.35.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2CH.35.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Archers shot King Josiah, and he told his officers, &#8220;Take me away; I am badly wounded.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2CH.35.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">So they took him out of his chariot, put him in his other chariot and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. He was buried in the tombs of his ancestors, and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2CH.35.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="2CH.35.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">Jeremiah composed laments for Josiah, and to this day all the male and female singers commemorate Josiah in the laments. These became a tradition in Israel and are written in the Laments.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="2CH.35.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="2CH.35.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">The other events of Josiah&#8217;s reign and his acts of devotion in accordance with what is written in the Law of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="2CH.35.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">all the events, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.</span></span></div>

class="content">&#8220;Should I not avenge myself</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JER.9.9"><span class="content">on such a nation as this?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JER.9.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">I will weep and wail for the mountains</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="content">and take up a lament concerning the wilderness grasslands.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="content">They are desolate and untraveled,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="content">and the lowing of cattle is not heard.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="content">The birds have all fled</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="content">and the animals are gone.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.9.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.9.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">&#8220;I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.9.11"><span class="content">a haunt of jackals;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.9.11"><span class="content">and I will lay waste the towns of Judah</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.9.11"><span class="content">so no one can live there.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.9.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JER.9.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Who is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JER.9.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JER.9.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said, &#8220;It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JER.9.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Instead, they have followed the stubbornness of their hearts; they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.9.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Therefore this is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8220;See, I will make this people eat bitter food and drink poisoned water. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.9.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">I will scatter them among nations that neither they nor their ancestors have known, and I will pursue them with the sword until I have made an end of them.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.9.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.9.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty says:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.9.17"><span class="content">&#8220;Consider now! Call for the wailing women to come;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.9.17"><span class="content">send for the most skillful of them.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.9.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JER.9.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Let them come quickly</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JER.9.18"><span class="content">and wail over us</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JER.9.18"><span class="content">till our eyes overflow with tears</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JER.9.18"><span class="content">and water streams from our eyelids.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JER.9.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JER.9.19"><span ruined we are!</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JER.9.19"><span class="content">How great is our shame!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v19" class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Dead bodies will lie</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JER.9.22"><span class="content">like dung on the open field,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JER.9.22"><span class="content">like cut grain behind the reaper,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.9.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.9.23"><span class="content">&#8220;Let not the wise boast of their wisdom</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.9.23"><span class="content">or the strong boast of their strength</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.9.23"><span class="content">or the rich boast of their riches,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JER.9.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JER.9.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">but let the one who boasts boast about this:</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JER.9.24"><span class="content">that they have the understanding to know me,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JER.9.24"><span class="content">that I am the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, who exercises kindness,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JER.9.24"><span class="content">justice and righteousness on earth,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JER.9.24"><span class="content">for in these I class="label">25</span><span class="content">&#8220;The days are coming,&#8221; declares the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, &#8220;when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="JER.9.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab class="fqa">wilderness and who clip the hair by their foreheads</span></span></span><span class="content"> For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is
