As we begin a new book, it’s helpful to lay the context: Ruth was a Gentile (Moabite), a woman, and a widow… all in all, an odd main character at this time in history! Israel was also going through a famine, and Naomi’s family left Bethlehem (meaning “house of bread”) because of it.

This short book focuses on love - God’s love that extends to all nations and love between people - as well as redemption. The theme of redemption is important here as, after years of tragedy, Naomi returns to Bethlehem, where this book mostly takes place.
