The Defiant Life

DAY 6 OF 8

Defy Logic

Logically, a slingshot and a few stones are not a winning strategy that a nation could pin its hopes on when they are under attack. Goliath remarked on how foolish David was coming at him with sticks and stones. At face value, I agree with Goliath’s sentiments because David’s combat strategy didn’t make sense at all.

Nevertheless, even though David’s strategy didn’t make human sense, it made God sense. David’s hope was never in his slingshot, for he said to Goliath, “I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Sam. 17:45 NIV). Therefore, he relied on God to take his insignificant things and bring about a great victory. He was courageous enough to step out armed with very little, to the horror of the Israelite army, whose gaze was firmly fixed on this young boy. I am sure both armies must have concluded it was a suicide mission because it defied logic. David’s victory was even more illogical because the odds were stacked against him.

Nevertheless, God is most glorified when the odds are against us in the natural. In moments like these, you must step out, even when it doesn’t make sense, but at God’s word, you go forward. Only then can you experience God’s supernatural intervention at work in your life.

God’s ways and his thoughts are higher than our ways and our thoughts. As such, his ways often defy our own, like the way the law of aerodynamics defies gravity. One transcends the other. God is not limited by our circumstances or our abilities because he infinitely transcends our limitations and all our capabilities. Instead, in our weakness and limitation, he invites us to experience his supernatural power, which defies human logic. After all, he uses the “things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise” (1 Cor. 1:27). If a few stones and a slingshot were good enough for God, imagine what he can do with even smaller things. Jesus proved this when he fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fish, which was nothing short of a supernatural miracle that defies logic. This, too, can be our reality if we have the faith and the courage to step out against all odds.
