One Sided Marriage

DAY 4 OF 6

Why Do One-Sided Marriages Happen? Part 2

Yesterday we looked at three of the common causes of a one-sided marriage. Thday let’s look at two more.

Individual problems. We all have problems but how we deal with them determines how they affect our marriage. I believe the tipping point comes when the problems become overwhelming to the spouse. It can be finances, work stress, health, or mental health, but the more it is a distraction from the marriage, the more one-sided the marriage will become. God has an answer for this. We find it in Phillipians 4:6. “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything.” When we turn away from what is overwhelming us and give it to God, Paul tells us that “then you will experience God’s peace.”

Passive-aggressive behavior. When one spouse uses passive aggressive behavior it can cause a one-sided marriage. They are very intentionally creating issues that will add more problems and/or responsibilities for their spouse. The marriage becomes the exact opposite of

God’s plan which Paul beautifully lays out for us in I Corinthians 13:4-7. “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

It is helpful to know some of the causes of a one-sided marriage that we have talked about the past two days. but awareness is only the first step. The answers and the healing will come from seeking God and letting Him guide you.

Today I want you to consider something. I want you to consider praying a dangerous prayer. Why is it a dangerous prayer? It is dangerous because God will show up. He will have answers and wisdom and challenges for you. If you don’t want Him showing up with His plan for you, then don’t pray this prayer. But if you choose to pray it, I promise you that you will never regret it. The prayer is from Psalm 139:23-24.“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Today’s Challenge:

  • Take time to pray about the two causes of one-sided marriages that we talked about today.
  • Individual problems and passive aggressive behavior: Are these an issue in your marriage?
  • Write down today’s three verses and keep them with you to read every day.
  • Are you ready to pray that “dangerous prayer?”
