Postpartum Depression: Light in the DarknessSample

Postpartum Depression: Light in the Darkness

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Support

Seek out support, Mama. I’m not sure where I would be without the support of several professional therapists, medical professionals, my supportive spouse and my prayer partners during my experience and continued journey with postpartum depression.

God did not intend for you to face anything alone. Do not believe or entertain thoughts and lies that you need to figure this out on your own, that you are just stuck with this, or that it will just work itself out eventually. Maybe you’ve even had the thought that you’re just going through a phase. Instead, trust and honor the still small voice prompting you to advocate for yourself and obtain the support you need. God meticulously places individuals in your life to support you along your journey. But God is not forceful. He is waiting for you to take the first step of faith. Call the therapist, connect with other mamas, speak to your doctor about what you’re going through, or share your struggles with a trusted friend or spouse. Take action.

The healing process and self-discovery will likely be different for each individual. One thing’s for sure- it’ll be a beautiful journey if you decide to trust God and put your faith into action. As I embarked on the journey of getting the support of a therapist, I started to realize that I was worthy of caring for myself in ways I had neglected after becoming a mother. I started learning how to feed myself with nutritionally dense food sources, drinking water, moving my body, having date nights with my husband, spending time with friends, and most importantly, changing the internal dialogue I had with myself. I started seeking out scriptures that backed up how I knew God intended me to live and be. I declared them over myself with conviction and faith. This is when my healing journey began to gain momentum.

I know it can feel scary if you’ve never reached out to a therapist or medical professional for support, but you are worthy of taking action to pour into your cup. Ask the Lord for courage, pick up the phone, dial the number, and ask for help, Mama.

Prayer: Lord, I trust that you have a plan and purpose for my life, plans for a hope and a future including the right individuals you’ve called and appointed to support me on this life journey. I thank you for aligning me with a God-directed, loving, genuine, credible, supportive therapist that can walk alongside me and provide wise counsel. I’m committed to listening and being in tune with the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and I am confident that You will make it clear which professionals I should partner with. Thank you for loving me in the best way- in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
