It was compassion that launched the Bible Society in Australia, in particular the compassion of Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of the Governor and a devout believer. She was moved by the plight of so many of the poor around her, often destitute but also without hope and direction. She recognised their need for both practical help and spiritual sustenance. Unless people of kindness and conviction act on their instincts, the harvest field will go to seed. A few days ago we celebrated the 200th birthday of the Bible Society in Australia, and we thank Elizabeth Macquarie for introducing the good shepherd to generations of new Australians.
How aware are you today that those around you are a harvest field, sheep without a shepherd? Are you one of those workers whom Jesus was looking for?
Lord, we are here as your servants, to take the love and hope we have found in Christ to everyone in need. Fill our hearts with compassion, just as the Lord Jesus has compassion for us. Amen.
