Real Hope: Acts, a Study of Acts 12-17

DAY 5 OF 6

Never A Dull Moment

Acts 16 is a pivotal chapter as it marks the beginning of Paul’s second missionary journey. Paul, Timothy, and Silas set out on a journey through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, but the Holy Spirit had other plans! Instead, upon their arrival in Philippi, they meet a group of women who had gathered by the river to pray. One of these women, Lydia, became the first convert of Paul’s ministry there, and the church in Philippi was born.

Paul and Silas encountered opposition from a slave girl who was possessed by a spirit of divination. Paul cast the spirit out of her, which angered her owners who were profiting from her fortune-telling abilities. They had Paul and Silas arrested and beaten, and they were thrown into prison.

While in prison, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns, and a great earthquake shook the prison, freeing all the prisoners’ bonds. The jailer, fearing that the prisoners had escaped, was about to kill himself, but Paul assured him that they were all still there. The jailer was deeply moved by their witness and asked them how he could be saved. Paul told him to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and he and his entire household were saved and baptized.

Never doubt the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us. Even in the face of opposition and suffering, God can use our witness to bring others to faith. Never a dull moment.
