 <div class="p">1Adam#4:1 Or The man made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.#4:1 Cain sounds like the Hebrew for brought forth or acquired. She said, &#8220;With the help of the Lord I have brought forth#4:1 Or have acquired a man.&#8221; 2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.</div><div class="p">Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4And Abel also brought an offering&#8212;fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.</div><div class="p"> 6Then the Lord said to Cain, &#8220;Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, &#8220;Let&#8217;s go out to the field.&#8221;#4:8 Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Masoretic Text does not have &#8220;Let&#8217;s go out to the field.&#8221; While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.</div><div class="p"> </div>

 <div class="p">5The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7So the Lord said, &#8220;I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created&#8212;and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground&#8212;for I regret that I have made them.&#8221; 8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.</div><div class="s1">Noah and the Flood</div><div class="p"> 9This is the account of Noah and his family.</div><div class="p">Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. 10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.</div><div class="p"> 11Now the earth was corrupt in God&#8217;s sight and was full of violence. 12God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13So God said to Noah, &#8220;I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14So make yourself an ark of cypress#6:14 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain. wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. 15This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.#6:15 That is, about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high or about 135 meters long, 23 meters wide and 14 meters high 16Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit#6:16 That is, about 18 inches or about 45 centimeters high all around.#6:16 The meaning of the Hebrew for this clause is uncertain. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark&#8212;you and your sons and your wife and your sons&#8217; wives with you. 19You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Noah did everything just as God commanded him.</div>

 <div class="p">8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9&#8220;I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10and with every living creature that was with you&#8212;the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you&#8212;every living creature on earth. 11I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12And God said, &#8220;This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17So God said to Noah, &#8220;This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">1Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2As people moved eastward,#11:2 Or from the east; or in the east they found a plain in Shinar#11:2 That is, Babylonia and settled there.</div><div class="p"> 3They said to each other, &#8220;Come, let&#8217;s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.&#8221; They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4Then they said, &#8220;Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6The Lord said, &#8220;If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9That is why it was called Babel#11:9 That is, Babylon; Babel sounds like the Hebrew for confused.&#8212;because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.</div>
