Courage Under Stress

DAY 3 OF 7

Finding God’s Grace in Every Trial

How you manage your anxiety and stress in difficult situations can make a huge difference in your quality of life. It can also affect those around you. This is especially true where medical and caregiving decisions are concerned, when often there is no clear right or wrong choice. Thankfully, God promises to “be gracious if you ask for help” (Isaiah 30:19).

Both of Sarah’s parents had dementia in their later years. Sadly, she watched their steady decline and faced many decisions about their care. At first, the questions focused on things like Dad’s ability to drive independently and Mom’s safety in the kitchen. But as time passed, decisions became more complicated. Should her parents continue to live alone in their home? When would they need hospice care? What paperwork would be required to cover end-of-life issues? Each choice had pros and cons, adding to her mounting stress.

Sarah thought about how her parents were the first to teach her to lean on the Lord and trust his grace. She’d seen her mom cry out to God many times. And her dad had been her favorite Bible storyteller. Although she felt alone sometimes, Sarah realized it was now her turn to seek the Lord’s help for her parents. She claimed Isaiah 30:20-21: “you will see your teacher with your own eyes. Your own ears will hear him.” She prayed, believing he would reply . . . “this is the way you should go.”

While her parents’ ability to recognize family members had dissipated, Sarah’s dad still hummed the melody of old hymns. Her mom, who had always been gentle, became angry and bitter at times. But Sarah often shared how her mom had met Jesus as a child and had taught women’s Bible studies for many years. She even posted her mom’s story on the door of her bedroom at the assisted living facility. During visits, she did her best to show love and patience. It was clear to all that Sarah’s parents had modeled a deep faith and commitment to God throughout their lifetime and would leave a loving legacy.

Maybe you’re in a similar situation—with too many looming decisions, life seems overwhelming. You can trust the constant presence of Christ. He sees you. He hears you. He remembers your struggles and is ready to guide and comfort you and your loved ones.
