Lent: A Journey to Hope in Uncertain TimesSample

Perhaps you have read about the differences between a scarcity and an abundance mindset. A scarcity mindset focuses on the constraints placed on us because of limited options, time, and resources. An abundance mindset looks at the world and sees endless possibilities and opportunities for everyone to flourish. The benefit of an abundant worldview has been examined in psychology, business, and education but is decidedly biblical-based. The Bible speaks of God’s unending love and resources. The ability to see abundance can impact our willingness to give freely. To be clear, this does not diminish the need for healthy boundaries. In fact, a lack of healthy boundaries often indicates that we believe we’re the giver of good things instead of being an ambassador, an intermediary, of God’s goodness.
Let’s wonder together: How might our generosity improve if we checked our mindset? Would we cultivate more authentic hope? Would we empower others? Would we see and experience God’s abundance more fully?
REFLECT
- This passage is part of a call to authentic gratitude for the Lord’s people. How are generosity and gratitude related?
RESPOND
- Where are you tempted toward a scarcity mindset? In what ways do you or could you cultivate an abundant worldview?
