Daily PresenceSample

A friend of mine was trying to teach his 5-year-old son about the value of working hard. So when his son told him that he wanted a Ferrari my friend replied, “if you want a Ferrari you’re going to have to work hard.” That quickly backfired as his son replied, “Well, I can also wait until you die and get it with my inheritance.” Not the way my friend intended that conversation to go. My very humble grandfather left each of his offspring some money as an inheritance. My uncle, who was not very smart with money, decided to move to the beach with a girlfriend and spent it all. In a couple of months, he had nothing. Inheritance can be a very tricky subject. Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes that you don’t know if the people inheriting what you labored for are going to be wise or foolish.
In today’s reading, Paul is speaking to the Ephesians about their spiritual inheritance. He talks about the riches of that inheritance and the benefits. Some of the things Paul mentions are: being adopted as sons, being holy and blameless in His sight, it is freely given, redemption, forgiveness, and grace. He finishes the list by saying that all of these are to bring unity in Christ.
What I love about our spiritual inheritance is that it is not physical. It is not something that we can stupidly spend on a Lamborghini or in a couple of months at a nice beach in Costa Rica. This inheritance is spiritual and it is personal. The inheritance that we have received is Jesus Christ himself. We were sealed by the Holy Spirit to be carriers of Jesus Christ. To be carriers of the good news. The beauty that we find through this inheritance is acknowledging that in Christ all of our needs are met. God is not limited and He has chosen us to be His people. As His people, we must learn what it means to live with this inheritance. Not as something that can be wasted, but as something that can and should be shared. If you found an unlimited treasure, wouldn’t you want to share it with your friends and family so that they could also partake in the blessings this treasure provides?
