Call me crazy, but I’m one of those people who believes (and witnesses) how modern science and the Bible are not in opposition to one another, but compliment each other. Scientific studies have only further revealed truths written in the Bible. One of the most interesting was an article explaining how the 10 plagues of Egypt could be explained through natural phenomena and how each plague would naturally lead to the next one. For example, the water turning to blood sounds a lot like a phenomenon called “red tide”. This is when a particular type of algae spawn and turn the water's blood red. Next, it was frogs. Well, if the water was experiencing this “red tide” the frogs would likely leave the waters seeking other sources of freshwater. Yet, when they couldn’t they would die; scattering the land with dead and rotting frogs. Leading to the next plague: flies. Of course, God could simply spawn these occurrences from pure nothingness, but I think it is so astounding to see how God’s power works through natural occurrences. So interesting!
I had the same type of encounter while reading through Isaiah. We see God promising that Babylon would be destroyed. Well, if we look through our Biblical history, it is said that the book of Isaiah was probably written around 740-700 B.C. Wouldn’t you know it, not more than 200 years later, Babylon was utterly destroyed by the Persians led by Cyrus the Great. Our reading today also lays out warnings for the Assyrians and Philistines as well. Both were conquered even before Babylon fell.
I love reading my Bible and then researching its rich history. Realizing that there is archeological, scientific, and historic evidence to support the truths in the Bible only makes it more relevant to me. These people and occurrences we read about are not just inspiration for our modern day lives, but they are a part of our spiritual history. A history rich in God’s holiness.
