There is an old joke about the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing to not put it in a fruit salad. The Proverbs are bits of wisdom and the beginning chapters are actually about the need for that wisdom. However, in Proverbs 2 vs 4, we are told to search for wisdom the way we would search for silver. I thought of how often I have torn my couch apart when I can’t find the remote to the television. I have taken the cushions off, replaced them, searched other places and gone back to the cushions. When I was pretty young, a radio station would hold contests to attract listeners. They had a giveaway for a large sum of money. The catch was that each day there would be a clue to where the money was located. Halfway through the contest, enough people thought they had figured out the location. My parents were some of those people. We drove to a large field outside of town that was famous with the locals. To their disappointment, several hundred friends apparently reached that conclusion. People were everywhere looking through bushes, digging up ground, etc. If someone left a spot, someone else would run over and see if they missed something. By the way, no one found the money. Other clues would come to reveal a different location. Today, we might have to increase the amount of money to get people interested. Can you imagine how hard people would search if they knew that somewhere on Sam Houston State campus was a free check for 1 million dollars? Some of us would camp out there! The Lord is telling us to have that kind of desire and dedication for wisdom. However, unlike the check, He assures us that if we search for it, we will find it. I know the process sometimes is difficult. Usually it’s difficult because there are a lot of other voices attempting to drown out wisdom. Honestly, I have discovered that my own selfish desires or fears can do a really great job of covering what should be pretty easy to hear. However, as long as we keep seeking wisdom in our situations, God will answer. After all, as much as you want to do His will, He wants you to do His will even more!
