The country was brought under their control, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JOS.18.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">but there were still seven Israelite tribes who had not yet received their inheritance.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JOS.18.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JOS.18.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">So Joshua said to the Israelites: &#8220;How long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of your ancestors, has given you? </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JOS.18.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Appoint three men from each tribe. I will send them out to make a survey of the land and to write a description of it, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JOS.18.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">You are to divide the land into seven parts. Judah is to remain in its territory on the south and the tribes of Joseph in their territory on the north. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JOS.18.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">After you have written descriptions of the seven parts of the land, bring them here to me and I will cast lots for you in the presence of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> our God. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JOS.18.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The Levites, however, do not get a portion among you, because the priestly service of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is their inheritance. And Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan. Moses the servant of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> gave it to them.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JOS.18.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JOS.18.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">As the men started on their way to map out the land, Joshua instructed them, &#8220;Go and make a survey of the land and write a description of it. Then return to me, and I will cast lots for you here at Shiloh in the presence of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JOS.18.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">So the men left and went through the land. They wrote its description on a scroll, town by town, in seven parts, and returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOS.18.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Joshua then cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Allotment for Benjamin</span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOS.18.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JOS.18.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">The first lot came up for the tribe of Benjamin according to its clans. Their allotted territory lay between the tribes of Judah and Joseph:</span></span></div><div class="pi1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JOS.18.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JOS.18.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">On the north side their boundary began at the Jordan, passed the northern slope of Jericho and headed west into the hill country, coming out at the wilderness of Beth Aven. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JOS.18.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">From there it crossed to the south slope of Luz (that is, Bethel) and went down to Ataroth Addar on the hill south of Lower Beth Horon.</span></span></div><div class="pi1"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JOS.18.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JOS.18.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">From the hill facing Beth Horon on the south the boundary turned south along the western side and came out at Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim), a town of the people of Judah. This was the western side.</span></span></div><div class="pi1"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JOS.18.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JOS.18.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The southern side began at the outskirts of Kiriath Jearim on the west, and the boundary came out at the spring of the waters of Nephtoah. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JOS.18.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">The boundary went down to the foot of the hill facing the Valley of Ben Hinnom, north of the Valley of Rephaim. It continued down the Hinnom Valley along the southern slope of the Jebusite city and so to En Rogel. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JOS.18.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">It then curved north, went to En Shemesh, continued to Geliloth, which faces the Pass of Adummim, and ran down to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JOS.18.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">It continued to the northern slope of Beth Arabah</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:18 </span><span class="ft">Septuagint; Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">slope facing the Arabah</span></span></span><span class="content"> and on down into the Arabah. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JOS.18.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">It then went to the northern slope of Beth Hoglah and came out at the northern bay of the Dead Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan in the south. This was the southern boundary.</span></span></div><div class="pi1"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JOS.18.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="JOS.18.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The Jordan formed the boundary on the eastern side.</span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="JOS.18.20"><span class="content">These were the boundaries that marked out the inheritance of the clans of Benjamin on all sides.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="JOS.18.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="JOS.18.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">The tribe of Benjamin, according to its clans, had the following towns:</span></span></div><div class="pi1"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="JOS.18.21"><span class="content">Jericho, Beth Hoglah, Emek Keziz, </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JOS.18.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Beth Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel, </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JOS.18.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Avvim, Parah, Ophrah, </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JOS.18.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Kephar Ammoni, Ophni and Geba&#8212;twelve towns and their villages.</span></span></div><div class="pi1"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JOS.18.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="JOS.18.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth, </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="JOS.18.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Mizpah, Kephirah, Mozah, </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="JOS.18.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah, </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="JOS.18.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">Zelah, Haeleph, the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah and Kiriath&#8212;fourteen towns and their villages.</span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="JOS.18.28"><span class="content">This was the inheritance of Benjamin for its clans.</span></span></div>

class="content"> has done this?</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JOB.12.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOB.12.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">In his hand is the life of every creature</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOB.12.10"><span class="content">and the breath of all mankind.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOB.12.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JOB.12.11"><span But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ISA.23.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ISA.23.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;Take up a harp, walk through the city,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ISA.23.16"><span class="content">you forgotten prostitute;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ISA.23.16"><span class="content">play the harp well, sing many a song,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ISA.23.16"><span class="content">so that you will be remembered.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ISA.23.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ISA.23.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">At the end of seventy years, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ISA.23.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">; they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, for abundant food and fine clothes.</span></span></div>

They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.28.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.28.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, &#8220;This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.28.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.28.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.28.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.28.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.28.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.28.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.28.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">They honored us in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Paul&#8217;s Arrival at Rome</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.28.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.28.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island&#8212;it was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.28.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.28.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.28.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">There we found some brothers and sisters who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.28.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The brothers and sisters there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these people Paul thanked God and was encouraged. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.28.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Paul Preaches at Rome Under Guard</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.28.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.28.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: &#8220;My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.28.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.28.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The Jews objected, so I was compelled to make an appeal to Caesar. I certainly did not intend to bring any charge against my own people. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.28.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.28.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.28.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">They replied, &#8220;We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.28.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.28.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.28.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying.
