There Miriam died and was buried.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="NUM.20.1"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="NUM.20.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="NUM.20.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">They quarreled with Moses and said, &#8220;If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">! </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.20.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Why did you bring the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.20.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.20.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="NUM.20.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> appeared to them. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.20.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.20.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">&#8220;Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.20.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="NUM.20.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">So Moses took the staff from the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s presence, just as he commanded him. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.20.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, &#8220;Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.20.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.20.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.20.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">But the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses and Aaron, &#8220;Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.20.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.20.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">These were the waters of Meribah,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">20:13 </span><span class="fq">Meribah </span><span class="ft">means </span><span class="fqa">quarreling.</span></span></span><span class="content"> where the Israelites quarreled with the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and where he was proved holy among them.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Edom Denies Israel Passage</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.20.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.20.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.20.14"><span class="content">&#8220;This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come on us. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.20.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors, </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.20.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">but when we cried out to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.20.16"><span class="content">&#8220;Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.20.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King&#8217;s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.20.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.20.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">But Edom answered:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.20.18"><span class="content">&#8220;You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.20.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.20.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The Israelites replied:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.20.19"><span class="content">&#8220;We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot&#8212;nothing else.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.20.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.20.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Again they answered:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.20.20"><span class="content">&#8220;You may not pass through.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.20.20"><span class="content">Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.20.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Death of Aaron</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.20.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="NUM.20.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="NUM.20.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses and Aaron, </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.20.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">&#8220;Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="NUM.20.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">Get Aaron and his son Eleazar and take them up Mount Hor. </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.20.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Remove Aaron&#8217;s garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will die there.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.20.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.20.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Moses did as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> commanded: They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.20.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">Moses removed Aaron&#8217;s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain, </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.20.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">and when the whole community learned that Aaron had died, all the Israelites mourned for him thirty days.</span></span></div>

         <div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="NUM.21.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="NUM.21.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Then Israel made this vow to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">: &#8220;If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:2 </span><span class="ft">The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the <span class="nd">Lord</span>, often by totally destroying them; also in verse 3.</span></span></span><span class="content"> their cities.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="NUM.21.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> listened to Israel&#8217;s plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:3 </span><span class="fq">Hormah </span><span class="ft">means </span><span class="fqa">destruction.</span></span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Bronze Snake</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="NUM.21.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.21.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:4 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">the Sea of Reeds</span></span></span><span class="content"> to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.21.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, &#8220;Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.21.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="NUM.21.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Then the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.21.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The people came to Moses and said, &#8220;We sinned when we spoke against the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and against you. Pray that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> will take the snakes away from us.&#8221; So Moses prayed for the people.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.21.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.21.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, &#8220;Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="NUM.21.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Journey to Moab</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="NUM.21.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.21.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.21.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab toward the sunrise. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.21.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.21.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon, which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.21.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">That is why the Book of the Wars of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.21.14"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8230;Zahab</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:14 </span><span class="ft">Septuagint; Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Waheb</span></span></span><span class="content"> in Suphah and the ravines,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.21.14"><span class="content">the Arnon </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.21.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">and</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:14,15 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">&#8220;I have been given from Suphah and the ravines / of the Arnon </span><span class="fv">15 </span><span class="fqa">to</span></span></span><span class="content"> the slopes of the ravines</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.21.15"><span class="content">that lead to the settlement of Ar</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.21.15"><span class="content">and lie along the border of Moab.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.21.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.21.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, &#8220;Gather the people together and I will give them water.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.21.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.21.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Then Israel sang this song:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.21.17"><span class="content">&#8220;Spring up, O well!</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.21.17"><span class="content">Sing about it,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.21.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.21.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">about the well that the princes dug,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.21.18"><span class="content">that the nobles of the people sank&#8212;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.21.18"><span class="content">the nobles with scepters and staffs.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.21.18"><span class="content">Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.21.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.21.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Defeat of Sihon and Og</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.21.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.21.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.21.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="NUM.21.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">&#8220;Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King&#8217;s Highway until we have passed through your territory.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="NUM.21.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="NUM.21.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.21.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Israel, however, put him to the sword and took over his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites, because their border was fortified. </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="NUM.21.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements. </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.21.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.21.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.21.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">That is why the poets say:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.21.27"><span class="content">&#8220;Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.21.27"><span class="content">let Sihon&#8217;s city be restored.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.21.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.21.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">&#8220;Fire went out from Heshbon,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.21.28"><span class="content">a blaze from the city of Sihon.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.21.28"><span class="content">It consumed Ar of Moab,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.21.28"><span class="content">the citizens of Arnon&#8217;s heights.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.21.28"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.21.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">Woe to you, Moab!</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.21.29"><span class="content">You are destroyed, people of Chemosh!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.21.29"><span class="content">He has given up his sons as fugitives</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.21.29"><span class="content">and his daughters as captives</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.21.29"><span class="content">to Sihon king of the Amorites.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.21.29"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="NUM.21.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">&#8220;But we have overthrown them;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="NUM.21.30"><span class="content">Heshbon&#8217;s dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="NUM.21.30"><span class="content">We have demolished them as far as Nophah,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="NUM.21.30"><span class="content">which extends to Medeba.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="NUM.21.30"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="NUM.21.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="NUM.21.31"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="NUM.21.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="NUM.21.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="NUM.21.33"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="NUM.21.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, &#8220;Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="NUM.21.34"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="NUM.21.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. And they took possession of his land.</span></span></div>

         <div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.18.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.18.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Some years later he went down to see Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged him to attack Ramoth Gilead. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.18.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, &#8220;Will you go with me against Ramoth Gilead?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.18.3"><span class="content">Jehoshaphat replied, &#8220;I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the war.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.18.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, &#8220;First seek the counsel of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.18.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.18.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">So the king of Israel brought together the prophets&#8212;four hundred men&#8212;and asked them, &#8220;Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I not?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.18.5"><span class="content">&#8220;Go,&#8221; they answered, &#8220;for God will give it into the king&#8217;s hand.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.18.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.18.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">But Jehoshaphat asked, &#8220;Is there no longer a prophet of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> here whom we can inquire of?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.18.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.18.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, &#8220;There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.18.7"><span class="content">&#8220;The king should not say such a thing,&#8221; Jehoshaphat replied.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.18.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.18.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, &#8220;Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.18.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.18.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.18.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns, and he declared, &#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: &#8216;With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.18.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.18.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. &#8220;Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious,&#8221; they said, &#8220;for the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> will give it into the king&#8217;s hand.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.18.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.18.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, &#8220;Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.18.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.18.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">But Micaiah said, &#8220;As surely as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> lives, I can tell him only what my God says.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.18.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.18.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">When he arrived, the king asked him, &#8220;Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I not?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.18.14"><span class="content">&#8220;Attack and be victorious,&#8221; he answered, &#8220;for they will be given into your hand.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.18.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.18.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The king said to him, &#8220;How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.18.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.18.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Then Micaiah answered, &#8220;I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said, &#8216;These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.18.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.18.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.18.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.18.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Micaiah continued, &#8220;Therefore hear the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">: I saw the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing on his right and on his left. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.18.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">And the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said, &#8216;Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.18.19"><span class="content">&#8220;One suggested this, and another that. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2CH.18.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and said, &#8216;I will entice him.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2CH.18.20"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;By what means?&#8217; the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2CH.18.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2CH.18.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will go and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,&#8217; he said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2CH.18.21"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;You will succeed in enticing him,&#8217; said the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. &#8216;Go and do it.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2CH.18.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2CH.18.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">&#8220;So now the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has decreed disaster for you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2CH.18.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2CH.18.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. &#8220;Which way did the spirit from</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:23 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">Spirit of</span></span></span><span class="content"> the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> go when he went from me to speak to you?&#8221; he asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2CH.18.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2CH.18.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Micaiah replied, &#8220;You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2CH.18.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="2CH.18.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">The king of Israel then ordered, &#8220;Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king&#8217;s son, </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="2CH.18.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">and say, &#8216;This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="2CH.18.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="2CH.18.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Micaiah declared, &#8220;If you ever return safely, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has not spoken through me.&#8221; Then he added, &#8220;Mark my words, all you people!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="2CH.18.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="2CH.18.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="2CH.18.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, &#8220;I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes.&#8221; So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="2CH.18.29"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="2CH.18.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, &#8220;Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="2CH.18.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, &#8220;This is the king of Israel.&#8221; So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> helped him. God drew them away from him, </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="2CH.18.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">for when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they stopped pursuing him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="2CH.18.32"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="2CH.18.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the breastplate and the scale armor. The king told the chariot driver, &#8220;Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I&#8217;ve been wounded.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="2CH.18.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">All day long the battle raged, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then at sunset he died.</span></span></div>
