They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="DEU.15.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="DEU.15.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="DEU.15.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">if only you fully obey the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="DEU.15.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">For the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="DEU.15.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="DEU.15.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="DEU.15.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="DEU.15.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: &#8220;The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near,&#8221; so that you do not show ill will toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> against you, and you will be found guilty of sin. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="DEU.15.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="DEU.15.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Freeing Servants</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="DEU.15.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="DEU.15.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">If any of your people&#8212;Hebrew men or women&#8212;sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="DEU.15.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="DEU.15.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give to them as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God has blessed you. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="DEU.15.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="DEU.15.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="DEU.15.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">But if your servant says to you, &#8220;I do not want to leave you,&#8221; because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="DEU.15.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="DEU.15.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="DEU.15.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God will bless you in everything you do.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Firstborn Animals</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="DEU.15.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="DEU.15.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Set apart for the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God every firstborn male of your herds and flocks. Do not put the firstborn of your cows to work, and do not shear the firstborn of your sheep. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="DEU.15.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Each year you and your family are to eat them in the presence of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God at the place he will choose. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="DEU.15.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">If an animal has a defect, is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="DEU.15.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">You are to eat it in your own towns. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it, as if it were gazelle or deer. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="DEU.15.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.</span></span></div>

He hamstrung all but a hundred of the chariot horses.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="1CH.18.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1CH.18.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1CH.18.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to him and brought him tribute. The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> gave David victory wherever he went.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1CH.18.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="1CH.18.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">David took the gold shields carried by the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1CH.18.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">From Tebah</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:8 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Tibhath, </span><span class="ft">a variant of </span><span class="fq">Tebah</span></span></span><span class="content"> and Kun, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, David took a great quantity of bronze, which Solomon used to make the bronze Sea, the pillars and various bronze articles.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1CH.18.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1CH.18.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1CH.18.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold, of silver and of bronze.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1CH.18.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1CH.18.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">King David dedicated these articles to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, as he had done with the silver and gold he had taken from all these nations: Edom and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1CH.18.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1CH.18.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1CH.18.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David.          <div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="EZR.6.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">King Darius then issued an order, and they searched in the archives stored in the treasury at Babylon. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.6.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">A scroll was found in the citadel of Ecbatana in the province of Media, and this was written on it:</span></span></div><div class="pmo"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.6.2"><span class="content">Memorandum:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.6.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="EZR.6.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">In the first year of King Cyrus, the king issued a decree concerning the temple of God in Jerusalem:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="EZR.6.3"><span class="content">Let the temple be rebuilt as a place to present sacrifices, and let its foundations be laid. It is to be sixty cubits</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">6:3 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 90 feet or about 27 meters</span></span></span><span class="content"> high and sixty cubits wide, </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="EZR.6.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">with three courses of large stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid by the royal treasury. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="EZR.6.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Also, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, are to be returned to their places in the temple in Jerusalem; they are to be deposited in the house of God.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="EZR.6.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="EZR.6.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Now then, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and you other officials of that province, stay away from there. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EZR.6.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Do not interfere with the work on this temple of God. Let the governor of the Jews and the Jewish elders rebuild this house of God on its site.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EZR.6.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="EZR.6.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Moreover, I hereby decree what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the construction of this house of God:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="EZR.6.8"><span class="content">Their expenses are to be fully paid out of the royal treasury, from the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="EZR.6.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Whatever is needed&#8212;young bulls, rams, male lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and olive oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem&#8212;must be given them daily without fail, </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EZR.6.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the well-being of the king and his sons.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EZR.6.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="EZR.6.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Furthermore, I decree that if anyone defies this edict, a beam is to be pulled from their house and they are to be impaled on it. And for this crime their house is to be made a pile of rubble. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.6.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">May God, who has caused his Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to change this decree or to destroy this temple in Jerusalem.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.6.12"><span class="content">I Darius have decreed it. Let it be carried out with diligence.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Completion and Dedication of the Temple</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.6.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="EZR.6.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Then, because of the decree King Darius had sent, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates carried it out with diligence. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="EZR.6.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the preaching of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo. They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="EZR.6.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="EZR.6.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="EZR.6.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Then the people of Israel&#8212;the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles&#8212;celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="EZR.6.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">For the dedication of this house of God they offered a hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred male lambs and, as a sin offering</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">6:17 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">purification offering</span></span></span><span class="content"> for all Israel, twelve male goats, one for each of the tribes of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EZR.6.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">And they installed the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their groups for the service of God at Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Passover</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EZR.6.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EZR.6.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">On the fourteenth day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EZR.6.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The priests and Levites had purified themselves and were all ceremonially clean. The Levites slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their relatives the priests and for themselves. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="EZR.6.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So the Israelites who had returned from the exile ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the unclean practices of their Gentile neighbors in order to seek the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="EZR.6.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">For seven days they celebrated with joy the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel.</span></span></div>
