 <div class="p">1Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. 2The people are strong and tall&#8212;Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: &#8220;Who can stand up against the Anakites?&#8221; 3But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.</div><div class="p"> 4After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, &#8220;The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.&#8221; No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 6Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.</div><div class="s1">The Golden Calf</div><div class="p"> 7Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8At Horeb you aroused the Lord&#8217;s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you. 9When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. 10The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.</div><div class="p"> 11At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. 12Then the Lord told me, &#8220;Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13And the Lord said to me, &#8220;I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. 16When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.</div><div class="p"> 18Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord&#8217;s sight and so arousing his anger. 19I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me. 20And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.</div><div class="p"> 22You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.</div><div class="p"> 23And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, &#8220;Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.&#8221; But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust him or obey him. 24You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.</div><div class="p"> 25I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights because the Lord had said he would destroy you. 26I prayed to the Lord and said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance that you redeemed by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28Otherwise, the country from which you brought us will say, &#8216;Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.&#8217; 29But they are your people, your inheritance that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">1All Israel was listed in the genealogies recorded in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. They were taken captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.</div><div class="s1">The People in Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 2Now the first to resettle on their own property in their own towns were some Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants.</div><div class="p"> 3Those from Judah, from Benjamin, and from Ephraim and Manasseh who lived in Jerusalem were:</div><div class="li1"> 4Uthai son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, a descendant of Perez son of Judah.</div><div class="li1"> 5Of the Shelanites#9:5 See Num. 26:20; Hebrew Shilonites.:</div><div class="li2">Asaiah the firstborn and his sons.</div><div class="li1"> 6Of the Zerahites:</div><div class="li2">Jeuel.</div><div class="li2">The people from Judah numbered 690.</div><div class="li1"> 7Of the Benjamites:</div><div class="li2">Sallu son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah;</div><div class="li2"> 8Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, the son of Mikri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah.</div><div class="li2"> 9The people from Benjamin, as listed in their genealogy, numbered 956. All these men were heads of their families.</div><div class="li1"> 10Of the priests:</div><div class="li2">Jedaiah; Jehoiarib; Jakin;</div><div class="li2"> 11Azariah son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the official in charge of the house of God;</div><div class="li2"> 12Adaiah son of Jeroham, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malkijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer.</div><div class="li2"> 13The priests, who were heads of families, numbered 1,760. They were able men, responsible for ministering in the house of God.</div><div class="li1"> 14Of the Levites:</div><div class="li2">Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, a Merarite; 15Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal and Mattaniah son of Mika, the son of Zikri, the son of Asaph; 16Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.</div><div class="li1"> 17The gatekeepers:</div><div class="li2">Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their fellow Levites, Shallum their chief 18being stationed at the King&#8217;s Gate on the east, up to the present time. These were the gatekeepers belonging to the camp of the Levites. 19Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family (the Korahites) were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the tent just as their ancestors had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the Lord. 20In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was the official in charge of the gatekeepers, and the Lord was with him. 21Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting.</div><div class="p"> 22Altogether, those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. The gatekeepers had been assigned to their positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer. 23They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the Lord&#8212;the house called the tent of meeting. 24The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north and south. 25Their fellow Levites in their villages had to come from time to time and share their duties for seven-day periods. 26But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God. 27They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.</div><div class="p"> 28Some of them were in charge of the articles used in the temple service; they counted them when they were brought in and when they were taken out. 29Others were assigned to take care of the furnishings and all the other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the special flour and wine, and the olive oil, incense and spices. 30But some of the priests took care of mixing the spices. 31A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the responsibility for baking the offering bread. 32Some of the Kohathites, their fellow Levites, were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table.</div><div class="p"> 33Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night.</div><div class="p"> 34All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs as listed in their genealogy, and they lived in Jerusalem.</div><div class="s1">The Genealogy of Saul</div><div class="li1"> 35Jeiel the father#9:35 Father may mean civic leader or military leader. of Gibeon lived in Gibeon.</div><div class="li2">His wife&#8217;s name was Maakah, 36and his firstborn son was Abdon, followed by Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah and Mikloth. 38Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They too lived near their relatives in Jerusalem.</div><div class="li1"> 39Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-Baal.#9:39 Also known as Ish-Bosheth</div><div class="li1"> 40The son of Jonathan:</div><div class="li2">Merib-Baal,#9:40 Also known as Mephibosheth who was the father of Micah.</div><div class="li1"> 41The sons of Micah:</div><div class="li2">Pithon, Melek, Tahrea and Ahaz.#9:41 Vulgate and Syriac (see also Septuagint and 8:35); Hebrew does not have and Ahaz.</div><div class="li2"> 42Ahaz was the father of Jadah, Jadah#9:42 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint (see also 8:36); most Hebrew manuscripts Jarah, Jarah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri, and Zimri was the father of Moza. 43Moza was the father of Binea; Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son and Azel his son.</div><div class="li1"> 44Azel had six sons, and these were their names:</div><div class="li2">Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.</div>

 <div class="p">1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.</div><div class="p"> 4Saul said to his armor-bearer, &#8220;Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. 6So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.</div><div class="p"> 7When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.</div><div class="p"> 8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.</div><div class="p"> 11When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.</div><div class="p"> 13Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.</div>

 <div class="p">1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, &#8220;They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don&#8217;t know where they have put him!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus&#8217; head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene</div><div class="p"> 11Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus&#8217; body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.</div><div class="p"> 13They asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;They have taken my Lord away,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and I don&#8217;t know where they have put him.&#8221; 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 15He asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Thinking he was the gardener, she said, &#8220;Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Jesus said to her, &#8220;Mary.&#8221;</div><div class="p">She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, &#8220;Rabboni!&#8221; (which means &#8220;Teacher&#8221;).</div><div class="p"> 17Jesus said, &#8220;Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, &#8216;I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: &#8220;I have seen the Lord!&#8221; And she told them that he had said these things to her.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to His Disciples</div><div class="p"> 19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221; 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 21Again Jesus said, &#8220;Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.&#8221; 22And with that he breathed on them and said, &#8220;Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone&#8217;s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to Thomas</div><div class="p"> 24Now Thomas (also known as Didymus#20:24 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, &#8220;We have seen the Lord!&#8221;</div><div class="p">But he said to them, &#8220;Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221; 27Then he said to Thomas, &#8220;Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28Thomas said to him, &#8220;My Lord and my God!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Then Jesus told him, &#8220;Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Purpose of John&#8217;s Gospel</div><div class="p"> 30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe#20:31 Or may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.</div>
