Prayer is not a “works” program—a legislated system of acquiring merit and, thereby, results. But prayer does enter strongly into the development of my relationship with God, and it isn’t because He gets to like me more, but because I get to know Him better. It has to do with knowing the Lord, understanding His heart and ways, and gaining His wisdom to guide and direct my life. I learn about God before His Throne.
