Homeschool Moms Teach the Psalms (Psalms 22 - 26)

DAY 1 OF 5

Psalm 22 - It Is Finished!

There is much theological discussion and interpretation surrounding this beautifully prophetic Psalm as it contains myriad prophecies that were fulfilled during Jesus’ Calvary experience. We immediately recognize the first verse, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” and the last verse, “It is finished,” as Jesus declared on the cross. Incredibly, David wrote this Psalm a thousand years before Christ, and it was beyond anything he could have understood at the time. It is an example of divine inspiration as we see the Word of God described in 2 Timothy 3:16.

Just as David had limited understanding of what all of this meant for the future of the long-awaited Messiah, nor how closely it fit all the minute details of the crucifixion, it gives me great encouragement and hope knowing that the same God who spoke through David has a glorious plan for the days of my life and the future of my children. He is always at work—and generationally so!

Let’s look at the final verse of Psalm 22: “They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.” That last phrase, “he hath done this,” is translated as “he has finished” or, as Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished.” He has completed the work and the victory for us, who are the ones “to be born,” and our children and grandchildren. Therefore, “My praise of thee shall be in the great congregation!” (v. 25). This idea is repeated in Psalm 145:4, which says, “One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.” The greatest joy on this earth is to see our children walking in this generational truth (3 John 1:4).

To Do With The Kids

As you read this Psalm to your children, ask them to tell you when they hear the fulfilled prophecies of the cross. Study the worm of verse 6 called the scarlet worm (cermes vermilio). This worm attaches itself firmly to an oak tree and dies as it gives birth to its young. We also get a crimson-colored dye from this worm. This reminds us of Jesus’ death to bring forth His generations of children in a new birth. Draw a scarlet worm on an oak tree and copy the verse Isaiah 1:18.
