Overcome! A hidden life awaits
In 1969 Peggy Lee had a hit song called “Is That All There Is?” The lyrics describe a world-weary woman who’s seen it all, tried it all, and is left with nothing but disappointment.
I fear that Peggy is speaking for a lot of people. Nothing has worked out for them as advertised. Their hopes, frustrated. Their dreams, crushed. Could you not, right now, without having to think too hard, make a list of ten permanent wounds that you carry? Does it make you sad to see your life slipping away? Do you feel cheated?
The Revelation of St. John helps you see that a magnificent hidden life awaits you in heaven and that it’s a gift of God’s grace to you just as miraculous manna once fell from heaven to feed the hungry Israelites. “To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it” (Revelation 2:17).
Group decisions used to be made with white and black stones. A black stone was a veto. A white stone was an affirmation. Think of it--through Jesus Christ your Savior, God has voted you in!
Don’t give up! Don’t quit! A magnificent hidden life awaits you!
