Dog Days and His Ways

DAY 9 OF 11

Stop

When I think of the word “stop” in working with dogs, I am reminded that the word “stop” literally saved my friend John’s dog’s life. Max is a handsome and spry chocolate lab. He loves his walks with John in his familiar neighborhood. One morning, Max saw an unfamiliar cat. Before John knew it, Max barreled across the street, full speed ahead after the cat. “STOP” shouted John, thankfully catching both Max’s attention and also the driver of the car who missed hitting Max by inches. Knowing the word “stop “saved Max’s life.

When you stay “stop” with a firm tone, dogs know you mean business. I say “stop” often to ours. Pearl hears “stop” when she pulls on the leash chasing a rabbit. Indoors, she’ll hear me say “stop” when she races around our coffee table or jumps on the bed to knock the pillows off (one of her favorite activities). Fitz hears “stop” when he barks a bit too long at the delivery people at the front door.

I hear “stop” sometimes too. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit nudges me to stop when I am complaining, gossiping, condemning or arguing. When I am tired yet push myself to complete an article or a painting I’m working on, often I’ll hear, “Stop, it’s time to rest.” It’s hard for me sometimes, but I am working on listening a bit better to His voice.

Is there something you need to stop? A bad habit? A behavior? Are there unhealthy foods you need to stop eating? Like me, do you need to stop pushing yourself when you are tired? With God’s help, you can.

Thank You Father for helping to stop the unwholesome behaviors in my life. Remind me that when I stop what’s wrong, that You always help me begin again. As I work with my dog, remind me that as You work with me, Your grace is never-ending.
