Salvation and Baptism: A Study for Teens

DAY 1 OF 4

Something’s Not Right

“For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive”—1 Corinthians 15:22 (NIV)

If you’ve ever watched a Star Wars movie, you’ve heard the line, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” It’s typically said when a character has a feeling that something isn’t right. The reality is, we should all feel this way about life. I’m not saying we need to mope around and be depressed, but there’s something in us that should recognize something isn’t right—and that something is sin. Every single thing that’s wrong with the world can be traced back to this little three-letter word.

Sin simply means, “to miss the mark.” We often think of sin as doing something wrong, which is true, but it also means so much more. The mark, or standard, is perfection; something we can’t even begin to attain. The Bible tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 NIV). Literally all of us have fallen short, and it started with the first humans ever, Adam and Eve. The world they lived in was perfect, and God actually walked with them! Unfortunately, when Satan presented them with an opportunity to sin, they took it. And since then we can say, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

When Adam and Eve ate the fruit they weren’t supposed to, everything changed. They were kicked out of the perfect garden they lived in, God no longer walked with them, death entered the world, sickness came, and so many other bad things. So, when you feel like something isn’t right, you’re right.

We’ll dig a little deeper into it tomorrow, but here’s the good news. God doesn’t want to leave us in that place where something isn’t right, so much so that He gave us the greatest gift ever, His Son Jesus. That feeling that something isn’t right is a good feeling to have, because it points us to the One who is right, Jesus. He came “to preach the gospel to the poor; . . . to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18 NKJV).
