DAY 70 OF 365

THE THRONE FOR JUDGMENT

In society today, the idea of judgment is widely misunderstood and really quite unpopular. Yet the Bible talks about God’s judgment as the means for making all things right. In God’s economy, judgment is what it costs to bring about restoration, which is the central hope of all humanity. The “whole creation has been groaning” to be redeemed (Ro 8:22 – 23). Thus when David celebrated God’s “throne for judgment,” he was picturing the end goals of justice meted out: refuge for the oppressed, remembrance of the needy and hopes fulfilled for the afflicted (Ps 9:7,9,18).

The longing for judgment and the cry for justice are dealt with at God’s throne, and it is Jesus who will act as judge. The New Testament speaks frequently about Jesus’ rightful role as judge (Mt 19:28; Jn 5:22 – 30; Ac 10:42; Ro 2:16). For those who are in Christ, the day that Jesus judges the world is a day to pray for and a day for which to give thanks (2Ti 4:8; 1Jn 4:17; Rev 19 – 21) — just like David. This is the day when all debts will be paid, tears will be wiped away and death will be forever conquered because Jesus has assumed the throne!

Jesus, I praise you, for you are just. I praise you, for you are right. I praise you for paying my debts and conquering my death. Amen.
