The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

DAY 164 OF 365

DECLARING GOD’S GREATNESS AT EVERY AGE

There are many reasons people want to live long lives. Some want to enjoy the fruits of careers — savoring the rewards of retirement. Others want to witness the successes of children and grandchildren. This psalmist had a God-centered reason for wanting to continue to live, and thrive, in his old age. He desired more time to declare the greatness of God’s power — to tell the stories of God’s faithfulness to the younger people around him.

Jesus encouraged Peter that, though he had sinned, his life would testify to the greatness of God — and he would continue to be used by God in powerful ways (Jn 21:18 – 19). Even at the end of his life, Peter would faithfully serve Christ. His very death would glorify God. Christians do not reach an age of discharge from the mission — a threshold of years beyond which they can rest from kingdom labors. Believers have the privilege and responsibility to tell the succeeding generations about the goodness and greatness of God. Stories of God’s faithfulness inspire the young to trust God — to live boldly, refusing to waste any days of life.

Jesus, I want to testify to your greatness every day of my life. Give me the energy to labor for you, until the day you bring me home. Amen.
