HIGH-TECH PROPHETS
In the early days of the "Internet Revolution," many of the high-tech prophets sold the world on the transformative power of this new form of communication. Dot-com wizards, hardly out of their teens, became instant paper millionaires, and the world gazed in wonder at this new phenomenon. There was only one problem - people created the Internet.
Soon a common medical term became an ominous threat to all users of the Internet. Viruses started invading computers and computer networks. New businesses had to be built to fortify systems against alien invasions, and so the battle began.
We should not be surprised. The computer virus is really no different than a person becoming infected by sin. Everything is working according to plan when suddenly the system begins to demonstrate strange and uncharacteristic behaviors. A virus slips through the defenses, and our behavior begins to malfunction. We begin to lie, stir up dissension, stop working, and start squandering our wealth and gifts.
As Paul explains it, "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do" (Romans 7:15). Once again, technology has become the instrument of our human nature, including the darker side of it.
Journal your thoughts and feelings on today's readings.
Spend time in prayer about what you wrote down.
