How to Pray for My School - a Guide for Students (Teens)

DAY 2 OF 6

Devotion

Our intercession might feel as if it lacks if we do not understand what role the Holy Spirit plays in intercession. When reading Romans 8 verses 26-27, we see that He intercedes on behalf of the saints. Paul uses a very important term to describe the Holy Spirit’s intercession; “with unexpressed groanings.” Unexpressed groaning literally means a groaning sound with words that cannot be uttered or understood by men! The Holy Spirit is passionately interceding on behalf of the saints (Christians)! This is important to know because today, we are praying for our Friendships, or better yet, our fellows.

We all understand the term friendship. We all have friends, be it many and far or few and near. But friends, nonetheless. Though there is nothing wrong with friendship, the Bible paints a much deeper spiritual truth when referring to those with whom we have friendships. Acts 2:42 describes the early Church devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers. Do you know what Fellowship means? I have heard a well-known definition; “Fellowship is two fellows in a ship going in the same direction.” This is pretty funny and accurate, but I am fonder of the more ancient understanding of fellowship. It derives from the Greek word koinōnia (pronounced koi-no-nia), which means to communicate, distribute, and participate. Its root word means a partnership! And that’s exactly what we need to pray for!

I grew up in a small farm town which so lacked true fellowship. I had friendships, but no one was my partner, my companion. Schools need fellowship, not friendship! When interceding for our schools, we need to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to raise fellows, partners, and companions and impart a sense of communion in Christ! Schools serve the goal of educating and developing the next generation, but the next generation will never change the world if they continue to be divided among themselves. Jesus says that a house divided on itself cannot stand, and the same principle applies to the next generation of Christians. The Christian population will not stand effectively nor be able to impact the world in a meaningful way if we are divided and lack companionship with each other. Paul teaches in Ephesians 6 on the armor of God, but he explicitly commands us to pray at all times in the Spirit (under the guidance of the Holy Spirit) for the saints with us!

When you pray:

Ask God to transform your friendships into vibrant communities of fellows, partners, and companions. Pray that God will cause friendships to form into groups participating in building each other up. Because of this, the next generation will be equipped to impact the world!
