 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">Repent or Perish</div><div class="p"> 1Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2Jesus answered, &#8220;Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them&#8212;do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Then he told this parable: &#8220;A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. 7So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, &#8216;For three years now I&#8217;ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven&#8217;t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 8 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Sir,&#8217; the man replied, &#8216;leave it alone for one more year, and I&#8217;ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath</div><div class="p"> 10On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, &#8220;Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.&#8221; 13Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.</div><div class="p"> 14Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, &#8220;There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15The Lord answered him, &#8220;You hypocrites! Doesn&#8217;t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.</div><div class="s1">The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast</div><div class="p"> 18Then Jesus asked, &#8220;What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20Again he asked, &#8220;What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds#13:21 Or about 27 kilograms of flour until it worked all through the dough.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Narrow Door</div><div class="p"> 22Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. 23Someone asked him, &#8220;Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He said to them, 24&#8220;Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, &#8216;Sir, open the door for us.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> &#8220;But he will answer, &#8216;I don&#8217;t know you or where you come from.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 26 &#8220;Then you will say, &#8216;We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 27 &#8220;But he will reply, &#8216;I don&#8217;t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 28 &#8220;There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus&#8217; Sorrow for Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 31At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, &#8220;Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 32He replied, &#8220;Go tell that fox, &#8216;I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.&#8217; 33In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day&#8212;for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!</div><div class="p"> 34 &#8220;Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, &#8216;Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.&#8217;#13:35 Psalm 118:26&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1">Jesus at a Pharisee&#8217;s House</div><div class="p"> 1One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, &#8220;Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?&#8221; 4But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.</div><div class="p"> 5Then he asked them, &#8220;If one of you has a child#14:5 Some manuscripts donkey or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?&#8221; 6And they had nothing to say.</div><div class="p"> 7When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8&#8220;When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, &#8216;Give this person your seat.&#8217; Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, &#8216;Friend, move up to a better place.&#8217; Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Then Jesus said to his host, &#8220;When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Great Banquet</div><div class="p"> 15When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, &#8220;Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Jesus replied: &#8220;A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, &#8216;Come, for everything is now ready.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 18 &#8220;But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, &#8216;I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 19 &#8220;Another said, &#8216;I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I&#8217;m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 20 &#8220;Still another said, &#8216;I just got married, so I can&#8217;t come.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 21 &#8220;The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, &#8216;Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 22 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Sir,&#8217; the servant said, &#8216;what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 23 &#8220;Then the master told his servant, &#8216;Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Cost of Being a Disciple</div><div class="p"> 25Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26&#8220;If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters&#8212;yes, even their own life&#8212;such a person cannot be my disciple. 27And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.</div><div class="p"> 28 &#8220;Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won&#8217;t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30saying, &#8216;This person began to build and wasn&#8217;t able to finish.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 31 &#8220;Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won&#8217;t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.</div><div class="p"> 34 &#8220;Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.</div><div class="p"> &#8220;Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols</div><div class="p"> 1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that &#8220;We all possess knowledge.&#8221; But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3But whoever loves God is known by God.#8:2,3 An early manuscript and another ancient witness think they have knowledge do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves truly knows.</div><div class="p"> 4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that &#8220;An idol is nothing at all in the world&#8221; and that &#8220;There is no God but one.&#8221; 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many &#8220;gods&#8221; and many &#8220;lords&#8221;), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.</div><div class="p"> 7But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.</div><div class="p"> 9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol&#8217;s temple, won&#8217;t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Paul&#8217;s Rights as an Apostle</div><div class="p"> 1Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? 2Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 3This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. 4Don&#8217;t we have the right to food and drink? 5Don&#8217;t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord&#8217;s brothers and Cephas#9:5 That is, Peter? 6Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack the right to not work for a living?</div><div class="p"> 7Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn&#8217;t the Law say the same thing? 9For it is written in the Law of Moses: &#8220;Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.&#8221;#9:9 Deut. 25:4 Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10Surely he says this for us, doesn&#8217;t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12If others have this right of support from you, shouldn&#8217;t we have it all the more?</div><div class="p">But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.</div><div class="p"> 13Don&#8217;t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? 14In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.</div><div class="p"> 15But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast. 16For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel.</div><div class="s1">Paul&#8217;s Use of His Freedom</div><div class="p"> 19Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God&#8217;s law but am under Christ&#8217;s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.</div><div class="s1">The Need for Self-Discipline</div><div class="p"> 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.</div>

 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Warnings From Israel&#8217;s History</div><div class="p"> 1For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3They all ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.</div><div class="p"> 6Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: &#8220;The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.&#8221;#10:7 Exodus 32:6 8We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did&#8212;and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9We should not test Christ,#10:9 Some manuscripts test the Lord as some of them did&#8212;and were killed by snakes. 10And do not grumble, as some of them did&#8212;and were killed by the destroying angel.</div><div class="p"> 11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don&#8217;t fall! 13No temptation#10:13 The Greek for temptation and tempted can also mean testing and tested. has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. But when you are tempted,#10:13 The Greek for temptation and tempted can also mean testing and tested. he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.</div><div class="s1">Idol Feasts and the Lord&#8217;s Supper</div><div class="p"> 14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.</div><div class="p"> 18Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord&#8217;s table and the table of demons. 22Are we trying to arouse the Lord&#8217;s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?</div><div class="s1">The Believer&#8217;s Freedom</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;I have the right to do anything,&#8221; you say&#8212;but not everything is beneficial. &#8220;I have the right to do anything&#8221;&#8212;but not everything is constructive. 24No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.</div><div class="p"> 25Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26for, &#8220;The earth is the Lord&#8217;s, and everything in it.&#8221;#10:26 Psalm 24:1</div><div class="p"> 27If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28But if someone says to you, &#8220;This has been offered in sacrifice,&#8221; then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. 29I am referring to the other person&#8217;s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another&#8217;s conscience? 30If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?</div><div class="p"> 31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God&#8212; 33even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.</div>
