Advent: Catholic ReflectionsSample

Our Bible readings today tell the stories of Samson and John the Baptist, two men set apart by God for particular ministries. Yesterday we read of the angel appearing to Joseph in a dream to reassure him that Mary spoke the truth and that he should take her as his wife and become the father of her child.
Today two more angelic appearances encourage and reassure men that their wives will bear children. In both our stories today there is an encouragement to refrain from wine and strong drink. Abstinence and fasting are the religious observances that can really draw us closer to the Lord and are often practiced, particularly during Lent.
Perhaps in these last days of Advent you might choose to fast or abstain from a treat so that you can dedicate more time to prayer and grow in thanksgiving and gratitude to God for his provision.

About this Plan

Advent is, of course, a time to prepare. To prepare our homes, lives, and our hearts. Join us as we explore the Bible readings used by the Church to challenge, encourage, and help us prepare, not only to celebrate the incarnation but also the second coming of Christ.
