Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample

A City on a Hill
Lifting our eyes is a familiar theme in the Psalms. But what does that even mean? Have you ever gone on a hike where there were hills or mountains? In this Psalm, the Israelites are on a journey to attend the annual feasts in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is referred to as "the city on a hill" throughout Scripture. A mountain is classified as a landmass over the elevation of 300 meters (1,000 feet), and Jerusalem stands on a hill at an elevation of 785 meters (2,575 feet). To get to the feasts, the Israelites were on a constant climb toward their spot of celebration. They could see the goodness ahead of them, but only if their eyes were lifted toward the promise of their destination.
GO DEEP: Read verses 3 and 4 again. Have you ever been in a place where you knew there were good things ahead but felt the negativity of the outside world weighing you down? What would happen if you lifted your eyes to focus on the One who is gracious and favourable to us? Sit for a moment with God and ask Him to reveal a situation in your life where you need to change your perspective and lift your eyes up to Him.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
