Exodus: A Group Study

DAY 33 OF 77

What is this passage saying?

The psalmist is calling the congregation to worship by declaring Yahweh’s creative power, supremacy over other gods, and coming judgment on the earth.

What is this passage teaching?

The primary motivation of worship in this psalm is Yahweh’s greatness compared to other gods. The psalmist declares, “(Yahweh) is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the people are worthless idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.” Just like in Egypt, the gods of the world are nothing compared to Yahweh. All of the security, peace, prosperity and gratification they offer cannot compare to Him. Truly, “Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary” (Psalm 96:6). The best way to see the fragility and impotence of idols is to remember Yahweh Himself created the heavens and the earth.

How do I respond?

The call to action in this psalm commands the congregation to “Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength! Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due His name” (Psalm 96:7-8). Take some time today to think through God’s glorious characteristics. Think of His boundless love, His omnipotent strengths, and gracious providence. Think of specific examples and situations where God has shown who He is to you. Once you have a list, “Worship Yahweh in the splendor of holiness” (Psalm 96:9). Sit and meditate on God’s goodness towards you. Celebrate how God’s loyal love bound Him to you. Rejoice that His power has delivered you from the greatest enemies of sin, death, and hell. Hope in His gracious providence that will lead you from the wilderness of this world into the Promised Land of eternal life. You will see the worthlessness of idols when you see the power and experience the presence of our great God.
