Exodus: A Group StudySample

What is this passage saying?
Out of anger towards the enslavement of his people, Moses lashes out and kills an Egyptian. Moses flees to the wilderness to escape Pharaoh’s punishment. After protecting their flocks, Moses is welcomed into Reuel’s family, marrying his daughter Zipporah.
What is this passage teaching?
Although raised in the royal household, Moses knew he was an Israelite. Hebrews 11:24-25 tells us, “By faith, Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.” Instead of identifying with the powerful and wealthy, Moses chose to identify with his lowly and enslaved people, rejecting any privilege he might have received as a member of Pharaoh’s household.
How do I respond?
In a world that is seemingly run by economic, political, and social power, it is hard not to get caught up in trying to achieve and maintain prominence. The desire to get degrees, jobs, promotions, or financial luxury can outpace our desires to see the kingdom of God proclaimed in our context and the world. Like Moses, identifying with God’s kingdom and being obedient to His Word will often cost you. It may mean walking away from a dream job or standing up for what is right when nobody else will. Like Moses, will you be willing to serve God in a wilderness exile, knowing He is preparing you for something bigger than you could anticipate?
