DAY 3 OF 7

The Trap// Relationships

When it comes to relationships, we have all at some point found ourselves hurt, disappointed, or upset. This is because many of us have a tendency to place our worth in them. We have looked to our family, friendships or romantic relationships to fulfill our heart’s deepest desires.

Relationships weren’t designed to fulfill our every need. Instead, they were designed to give us the gift of godly community. However, when we are motivated to pursue relationships for our own gain rather than His Glory, relationships become a trap instead of the treasure they were designed to be.

The Truth

Truth #1: God is more reliable than people.

Oftentimes, we look to our partner, our spouse, our family member or best friend to give us the validation, comfort, or approval that can only come from God. God is clear and consistent in his love for us. Unlike our experience with people, His love for us is based on His goodness and not our own.

Truth #2: Wise criteria > Weak criteria

God wants us to thrive in healthy relationships. If our desire to be in a relationship with someone is based on weak criteria like convenience, proximity, status or appearance, we should re-evaluate our interest. The best relationships are built on wise criteria like character, sacrifice, clear communication and consistency. Every relationship should consist of traits that have true and lasting value.

Truth #3: There’s too much at stake.

We can’t underestimate the impact relationships have on the trajectory of our lives. Our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are influenced regularly by the people we decide to keep around us. In relationships, we must ensure that we pursue the people God has called us to rather than the ones we choose for ourselves.

Application:

We can avoid falling into relationship traps by reminding ourselves of a few things:

  1. Only God satisfies. We are whole and complete in Him alone.
  2. If we don’t like the story our relationships tell, changing our criteria can help us change the story.
  3. A God-honoring life is full of God-honoring relationships.

As you read through the Bible references for this day, consider the type of community God desires for us and determine whether your closest relationships measure up.
