 <div class="label">2</div><div class="pi"> 1Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="li1"> 2By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.</div><div class="s1">Adam and Eve</div><div class="p"> 4This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 5Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth#2:5 Or land; also in verse 6 and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6but streams#2:6 Or mist came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7Then the Lord God formed a man#2:7 The Hebrew for man (adam) sounds like and may be related to the Hebrew for ground (adamah); it is also the name Adam (see verse 20). from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.</div><div class="p"> 8Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground&#8212;trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.</div><div class="p"> 10A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin#2:12 Or good; pearls and onyx are also there.) 13The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.#2:13 Possibly southeast Mesopotamia 14The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.</div><div class="p"> 15The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16And the Lord God commanded the man, &#8220;You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18The Lord God said, &#8220;It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.</div><div class="p">But for Adam#2:20 Or the man no suitable helper was found. 21So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man&#8217;s ribs#2:21 Or took part of the man&#8217;s side and then closed up the place with flesh. 22Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib#2:22 Or part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.</div><div class="p"> 23The man said,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;This is now bone of my bones</div><div class="q2">and flesh of my flesh;</div><div class="q1">she shall be called &#8216;woman,&#8217;</div><div class="q2">for she was taken out of man.&#8221;</div><div class="m"> 24That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.</div><div class="p"> 25Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.</div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">The Fellowship Offering</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If your offering is a fellowship offering, and you offer an animal from the herd, whether male or female, you are to present before the Lord an animal without defect. 2You are to lay your hand on the head of your offering and slaughter it at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Then Aaron&#8217;s sons the priests shall splash the blood against the sides of the altar. 3From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering to the Lord: the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, 4both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. 5Then Aaron&#8217;s sons are to burn it on the altar on top of the burnt offering that is lying on the burning wood; it is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If you offer an animal from the flock as a fellowship offering to the Lord, you are to offer a male or female without defect. 7If you offer a lamb, you are to present it before the Lord, 8lay your hand on its head and slaughter it in front of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron&#8217;s sons shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar. 9From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering to the Lord: its fat, the entire fat tail cut off close to the backbone, the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, 10both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. 11The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering presented to the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If your offering is a goat, you are to present it before the Lord, 13lay your hand on its head and slaughter it in front of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron&#8217;s sons shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar. 14From what you offer you are to present this food offering to the Lord: the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, 15both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. 16The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering, a pleasing aroma. All the fat is the Lord&#8217;s.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live: You must not eat any fat or any blood.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">The Sin Offering</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Say to the Israelites: &#8216;When anyone sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord&#8217;s commands&#8212;</div><div class="p"> 3&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the Lord a young bull without defect as a sin offering#4:3 Or purification offering; here and throughout this chapter for the sin he has committed. 4He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the Lord. 5Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull&#8217;s blood and carry it into the tent of meeting. 6He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle some of it seven times before the Lord, in front of the curtain of the sanctuary. 7The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull&#8217;s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 8He shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering&#8212;all the fat that is connected to the internal organs, 9both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys&#8212; 10just as the fat is removed from the ox#4:10 The Hebrew word can refer to either male or female. sacrificed as a fellowship offering. Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering. 11But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the internal organs and the intestines&#8212; 12that is, all the rest of the bull&#8212;he must take outside the camp to a place ceremonially clean, where the ashes are thrown, and burn it there in a wood fire on the ash heap.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord&#8217;s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guilt 14and the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the tent of meeting. 15The elders of the community are to lay their hands on the bull&#8217;s head before the Lord, and the bull shall be slaughtered before the Lord. 16Then the anointed priest is to take some of the bull&#8217;s blood into the tent of meeting. 17He shall dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle it before the Lord seven times in front of the curtain. 18He is to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19He shall remove all the fat from it and burn it on the altar, 20and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the community, and they will be forgiven. 21Then he shall take the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the community.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, when he realizes his guilt 23and the sin he has committed becomes known, he must bring as his offering a male goat without defect. 24He is to lay his hand on the goat&#8217;s head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord. It is a sin offering. 25Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 26He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the leader&#8217;s sin, and he will be forgiven.</div><div class="p"> 27&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If any member of the community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord&#8217;s commands, when they realize their guilt 28and the sin they have committed becomes known, they must bring as their offering for the sin they committed a female goat without defect. 29They are to lay their hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering. 30Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 31They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.</div><div class="p"> 32&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If someone brings a lamb as their sin offering, they are to bring a female without defect. 33They are to lay their hand on its head and slaughter it for a sin offering at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. 34Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 35They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">The Magi Visit the Messiah</div><div class="p"> 1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi#2:1 Traditionally wise men from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, &#8220;Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people&#8217;s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5&#8220;In Bethlehem in Judea,&#8221; they replied, &#8220;for this is what the prophet has written:</div><div class="q1"> 6&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,</div><div class="q2">are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;</div><div class="q1">for out of you will come a ruler</div><div class="q2">who will shepherd my people Israel.&#8217;#2:6 Micah 5:2,4&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, &#8220;Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.</div><div class="s1">The Escape to Egypt</div><div class="p"> 13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. &#8220;Get up,&#8221; he said, &#8220;take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: &#8220;Out of Egypt I called my son.&#8221;#2:15 Hosea 11:1</div><div class="p"> 16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:</div><div class="q1"> 18&#8220;A voice is heard in Ramah,</div><div class="q2">weeping and great mourning,</div><div class="q1">Rachel weeping for her children</div><div class="q2">and refusing to be comforted,</div><div class="q2">because they are no more.&#8221;#2:18 Jer. 31:15</div><div class="s1">The Return to Nazareth</div><div class="p"> 19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, &#8220;Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child&#8217;s life are dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.</div>
