 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">Driving Out the Nations</div><div class="p"> 1When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations&#8212;the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you&#8212; 2and when the Lord your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally.#7:2 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them; also in verse 26. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. 3Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods, and the Lord&#8217;s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you. 5This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles#7:5 That is, wooden symbols of the goddess Asherah; here and elsewhere in Deuteronomy and burn their idols in the fire. 6For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.</div><div class="p"> 7The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. 10But</div><div class="q1">those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;</div><div class="q2">he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.</div><div class="m"> 11Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.</div><div class="p"> 12If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors. 13He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land&#8212;your grain, new wine and olive oil&#8212;the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. 14You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young. 15The Lord will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you. 16You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.</div><div class="p"> 17You may say to yourselves, &#8220;These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?&#8221; 18But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. 19You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear. 20Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God. 22The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them. 25The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God. 26Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.</div>

 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">Reuben</div><div class="p"> 1The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father&#8217;s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright, 2and though Judah was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler came from him, the rights of the firstborn belonged to Joseph)&#8212; 3the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel:</div><div class="li1">Hanok, Pallu, Hezron and Karmi.</div><div class="li1"> 4The descendants of Joel:</div><div class="li2">Shemaiah his son, Gog his son,</div><div class="li2">Shimei his son, 5Micah his son,</div><div class="li2">Reaiah his son, Baal his son,</div><div class="li2"> 6and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-Pileser#5:6 Hebrew Tilgath-Pilneser, a variant of Tiglath-Pileser; also in verse 26 king of Assyria took into exile. Beerah was a leader of the Reubenites.</div><div class="li1"> 7Their relatives by clans, listed according to their genealogical records:</div><div class="li2">Jeiel the chief, Zechariah, 8and Bela son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel. They settled in the area from Aroer to Nebo and Baal Meon. 9To the east they occupied the land up to the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates River, because their livestock had increased in Gilead.</div><div class="pi2"> 10During Saul&#8217;s reign they waged war against the Hagrites, who were defeated at their hands; they occupied the dwellings of the Hagrites throughout the entire region east of Gilead.</div><div class="s1">Gad</div><div class="li1"> 11The Gadites lived next to them in Bashan, as far as Salekah:</div><div class="li2"> 12Joel was the chief, Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat, in Bashan.</div><div class="li1"> 13Their relatives, by families, were:</div><div class="li2">Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia and Eber&#8212;seven in all.</div><div class="li2"> 14These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz.</div><div class="li2"> 15Ahi son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was head of their family.</div><div class="li1"> 16The Gadites lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its outlying villages, and on all the pasturelands of Sharon as far as they extended.</div><div class="p"> 17All these were entered in the genealogical records during the reigns of Jotham king of Judah and Jeroboam king of Israel.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 18The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 men ready for military service&#8212;able-bodied men who could handle shield and sword, who could use a bow, and who were trained for battle. 19They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him. 21They seized the livestock of the Hagrites&#8212;fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep and two thousand donkeys. They also took one hundred thousand people captive, 22and many others fell slain, because the battle was God&#8217;s. And they occupied the land until the exile.</div><div class="s1">The Half-Tribe of Manasseh</div><div class="p"> 23The people of the half-tribe of Manasseh were numerous; they settled in the land from Bashan to Baal Hermon, that is, to Senir (Mount Hermon).</div><div class="p"> 24These were the heads of their families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jahdiel. They were brave warriors, famous men, and heads of their families. 25But they were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.</div>

 <div class="label">18</div><div class="s1">Jesus Arrested</div><div class="p"> 1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.</div><div class="p"> 2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.</div><div class="p"> 4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> &#8220;I am he,&#8221; Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6When Jesus said, &#8220;I am he,&#8221; they drew back and fell to the ground.</div><div class="p"> 7Again he asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they said.</div><div class="p"> 8Jesus answered, &#8220;I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.&#8221; 9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: &#8220;I have not lost one of those you gave me.&#8221;#18:9 John 6:39</div><div class="p"> 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest&#8217;s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant&#8217;s name was Malchus.)</div><div class="p"> 11Jesus commanded Peter, &#8220;Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.</div><div class="s1">Peter&#8217;s First Denial</div><div class="p"> 15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest&#8217;s courtyard, 16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;You aren&#8217;t one of this man&#8217;s disciples too, are you?&#8221; she asked Peter.</div><div class="p">He replied, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.</div><div class="s1">The High Priest Questions Jesus</div><div class="p"> 19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.</div><div class="p"> 20 &#8220;I have spoken openly to the world,&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. &#8220;Is this the way you answer the high priest?&#8221; he demanded.</div><div class="p"> 23 &#8220;If I said something wrong,&#8221; Jesus replied, &#8220;testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?&#8221; 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.</div><div class="s1">Peter&#8217;s Second and Third Denials</div><div class="p"> 25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, &#8220;You aren&#8217;t one of his disciples too, are you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He denied it, saying, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26One of the high priest&#8217;s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I see you with him in the garden?&#8221; 27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before Pilate</div><div class="p"> 28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate came out to them and asked, &#8220;What charges are you bringing against this man?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 30&#8220;If he were not a criminal,&#8221; they replied, &#8220;we would not have handed him over to you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31Pilate said, &#8220;Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;But we have no right to execute anyone,&#8221; they objected. 32This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.</div><div class="p"> 33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, &#8220;Are you the king of the Jews?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34 &#8220;Is that your own idea,&#8221; Jesus asked, &#8220;or did others talk to you about me?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 35&#8220;Am I a Jew?&#8221; Pilate replied. &#8220;Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 36Jesus said, &#8220;My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37&#8220;You are a king, then!&#8221; said Pilate.</div><div class="p">Jesus answered, &#8220;You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 38&#8220;What is truth?&#8221; retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, &#8220;I find no basis for a charge against him. 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release &#8216;the king of the Jews&#8217;?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 40They shouted back, &#8220;No, not him! Give us Barabbas!&#8221; Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.</div>
