 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">God&#8217;s Covenant With Noah</div><div class="p"> 1Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, &#8220;Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. 3Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.</div><div class="p"> 4&#8220;But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. 5And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.</div><div class="q1"> 6&#8220;Whoever sheds human blood,</div><div class="q2">by humans shall their blood be shed;</div><div class="q1">for in the image of God</div><div class="q2">has God made mankind.</div><div class="m"> 7As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9&#8220;I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10and with every living creature that was with you&#8212;the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you&#8212;every living creature on earth. 11I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12And God said, &#8220;This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17So God said to Noah, &#8220;This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Sons of Noah</div><div class="p"> 18The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.</div><div class="p"> 20Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded#9:20 Or soil, was the first to plant a vineyard. 21When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father&#8217;s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.</div><div class="p"> 24When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25he said,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Cursed be Canaan!</div><div class="q2">The lowest of slaves</div><div class="q2">will he be to his brothers.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26He also said,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!</div><div class="q2">May Canaan be the slave of Shem.</div><div class="q1"> 27May God extend Japheth&#8217;s#9:27 Japheth sounds like the Hebrew for extend. territory;</div><div class="q2">may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,</div><div class="q2">and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.</div>

 <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1">Eating Blood Forbidden</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;This is what the Lord has commanded: 3Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox,#17:3 The Hebrew word can refer to either male or female. a lamb or a goat in the camp or outside of it 4instead of bringing it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord&#8212;that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people. 5This is so the Israelites will bring to the Lord the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the Lord, at the entrance to the tent of meeting and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings. 6The priest is to splash the blood against the altar of the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting and burn the fat as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 7They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols#17:7 Or the demons to whom they prostitute themselves. This is to be a lasting ordinance for them and for the generations to come.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;Say to them: &#8216;Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9and does not bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to sacrifice it to the Lord must be cut off from the people of Israel.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, and I will cut them off from the people. 11For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one&#8217;s life.#17:11 Or atonement by the life in the blood 12Therefore I say to the Israelites, &#8220;None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among you who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth, 14because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, &#8220;You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or torn by wild animals must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be ceremonially unclean till evening; then they will be clean. 16But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be held responsible.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">18</div><div class="s1">Unlawful Sexual Relations</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Speak to the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;I am the Lord your God. 3You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. 4You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God. 5Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your father&#8217;s wife; that would dishonor your father.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father&#8217;s daughter or your mother&#8217;s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your son&#8217;s daughter or your daughter&#8217;s daughter; that would dishonor you.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father&#8217;s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your father&#8217;s sister; she is your father&#8217;s close relative.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your mother&#8217;s sister, because she is your mother&#8217;s close relative.</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not dishonor your father&#8217;s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son&#8217;s wife; do not have relations with her.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your brother&#8217;s wife; that would dishonor your brother.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sexual relations with either her son&#8217;s daughter or her daughter&#8217;s daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness.</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not take your wife&#8217;s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.</div><div class="p"> 19&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness of her monthly period.</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor&#8217;s wife and defile yourself with her.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.</div><div class="p"> 24&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Everyone who does any of these detestable things&#8212;such persons must be cut off from their people. 30Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man</div><div class="p"> 1Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, &#8220;Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, &#8220;This fellow is blaspheming!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, &#8220;Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5Which is easier: to say, &#8216;Your sins are forgiven,&#8217; or to say, &#8216;Get up and walk&#8217;? 6But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.&#8221; So he said to the paralyzed man, &#8220;Get up, take your mat and go home.&#8221; 7Then the man got up and went home. 8When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.</div><div class="s1">The Calling of Matthew</div><div class="p"> 9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector&#8217;s booth. &#8220;Follow me,&#8221; he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.</div><div class="p"> 10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew&#8217;s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, &#8220;Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12On hearing this, Jesus said, &#8220;It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: &#8216;I desire mercy, not sacrifice.&#8217;#9:13 Hosea 6:6 For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Questioned About Fasting</div><div class="p"> 14Then John&#8217;s disciples came and asked him, &#8220;How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Jesus answered, &#8220;How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.</div><div class="p"> 16 &#8220;No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman</div><div class="p"> 18While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, &#8220;My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.&#8221; 19Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.</div><div class="p"> 20Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21She said to herself, &#8220;If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Jesus turned and saw her. &#8220;Take heart, daughter,&#8221; he said, &#8220;your faith has healed you.&#8221; And the woman was healed at that moment.</div><div class="p"> 23When Jesus entered the synagogue leader&#8217;s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, 24he said, &#8220;Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.&#8221; But they laughed at him. 25After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. 26News of this spread through all that region.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute</div><div class="p"> 27As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, &#8220;Have mercy on us, Son of David!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, &#8220;Do you believe that I am able to do this?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes, Lord,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> 29Then he touched their eyes and said, &#8220;According to your faith let it be done to you&#8221;; 30and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, &#8220;See that no one knows about this.&#8221; 31But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.</div><div class="p"> 32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, &#8220;Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34But the Pharisees said, &#8220;It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Workers Are Few</div><div class="p"> 35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, &#8220;The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.&#8221;</div>
