Dive Deeper Into the Book of Jonah

DAY 1 OF 10

Nineveh was an important metropolis in Assyria, a great city by worldly standards. But the Ninevites lived sinful lives. Their wickedness was so great that God could no longer tolerate it. He chose Jonah to warn the people about the consequences of their sins. God’s intention was not to prepare the Ninevites for their impending destruction. He wanted them to see the ugliness of their condition and repent of their ways.

God commanded Jonah to “arise”, “go,” and “call out.” He wanted action from the prophet. He wants the same action from us today. God wants us to see the sin and suffering in our communities through His eyes. He wants us to be compassionate toward our friends whose lifestyles are leading them down the path of destruction. He calls us to leave our comfort zones and make the extra effort to reach out to our unsaved loved ones and neighbors.

Jesus commands us to go and make disciples of all nations. Sharing God’s love with unbelievers can be frightening or inconvenient, but we have nothing to fear. We are not alone in our mission. Jesus assures us that His presence accompanies us and empowers us to obey His commands.

Let’s step out in faith and boldly proclaim His love to the world.

Reflection

When was the last time you prayed for your community and lamented over the sins prevalent in your culture?

What do you fear most about sharing God’s truth with others?

Action

Think of two or three friends who do not know Jesus. Ask God to show you how you can pray for them and share the gospel with them.
