         <div class="label">33</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jacob Meets Esau</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="GEN.33.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.33.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.33.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.33.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.33.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.33.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. &#8220;Who are these with you?&#8221; he asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.33.5"><span class="content">Jacob answered, &#8220;They are the children God has graciously given your servant.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.33.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.33.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.33.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.33.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.33.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Esau asked, &#8220;What&#8217;s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.33.8"><span class="content">&#8220;To find favor in your eyes, my lord,&#8221; he said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.33.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.33.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">But Esau said, &#8220;I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.33.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.33.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">&#8220;No, please!&#8221; said Jacob. &#8220;If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.33.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.&#8221; And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.33.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.33.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Then Esau said, &#8220;Let us be on our way; I&#8217;ll accompany you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.33.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.33.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">But Jacob said to him, &#8220;My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.33.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.33.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.33.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Esau said, &#8220;Then let me leave some of my men with you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.33.15"><span class="content">&#8220;But why do that?&#8221; Jacob asked. &#8220;Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.33.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.33.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.33.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">33:17 </span><span class="fq">Sukkoth </span><span class="ft">means </span><span class="fq">shelters</span><span class="fqa">.</span></span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.33.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.33.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">33:18 </span><span class="ft">That is, Northwest Mesopotamia</span></span></span><span class="content"> he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.33.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">For a hundred pieces of silver,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">33:19 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">hundred kesitahs</span><span class="ft">; a kesitah was a unit of money of unknown weight and value.</span></span></span><span class="content"> he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.33.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">33:20 </span><span class="fq">El Elohe Israel </span><span class="ft">can mean </span><span class="fqa">El is the God of Israel </span><span class="ft">or </span><span class="fqa">mighty is the God of Israel.</span></span></span></span></div>

         <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.10.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.10.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.10.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.10.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">&#8220;Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.10.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.10.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Rehoboam answered, &#8220;Come back to me in three days.&#8221; So the people went away.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.10.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.10.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. &#8220;How would you advise me to answer these people?&#8221; he asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.10.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.10.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">They replied, &#8220;If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.10.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.10.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.10.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">He asked them, &#8220;What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, &#8216;Lighten the yoke your father put on us&#8217;?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.10.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.10.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">The young men who had grown up with him replied, &#8220;The people have said to you, &#8216;Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.&#8217; Now tell them, &#8216;My little finger is thicker than my father&#8217;s waist. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.10.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.10.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.10.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, &#8220;Come back to me in three days.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.10.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.10.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">he followed the advice of the young men and said, &#8220;My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.10.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.10.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.10.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.10.16"><span class="content">&#8220;What share do we have in David,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.10.16"><span class="content">what part in Jesse&#8217;s son?</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.10.16"><span class="content">To your tents, Israel!</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.10.16"><span class="content">Look after your own house, David!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.10.16"><span class="content">So all the Israelites went home. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.10.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.10.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.10.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">10:18 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Hadoram, </span><span class="ft">a variant of </span><span class="fq">Adoniram</span></span></span><span class="content"> who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.10.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.2.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ACT.2.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.2.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.2.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:4 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">languages</span><span class="ft">; also in verse 11</span></span></span><span class="content"> as the Spirit enabled them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.2.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.2.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.2.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.2.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Utterly amazed, they asked: &#8220;Aren&#8217;t all these who are speaking Galileans? </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.2.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.2.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:9 </span><span class="ft">That is, the Roman province by that name</span></span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.2.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.2.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs&#8212;we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.2.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, &#8220;What does this mean?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.2.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.2.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Some, however, made fun of them and said, &#8220;They have had too much wine.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Peter Addresses the Crowd</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.2.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.2.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: &#8220;Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.2.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It&#8217;s only nine in the morning! </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.2.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.2.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.2.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;In the last days, God says,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.2.17"><span class="content">I will pour out my Spirit on all people.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.2.17"><span class="content">Your sons and daughters will prophesy,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.2.17"><span class="content">your young men will see visions,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse
