Tru Hip Hop: Round 1

DAY 5 OF 5

Praverb the Wise

Relying on God

I’m relying on God and not man.

What makes you who you are? Is it what you have? Is it what you have done?

Culture is aimed at defining the worth of a man from anything such as having a nice house, to landing a respectable job, and ranging from everything else under the sun. However, when a person’s worth is based on what they can do or obtain, it creates a performance trap that no one can escape. In this sort of scenario, you are only as good as your most recent purchase or success.

None of those purchases or victories are meant to maintain a man. Our feelings are fleeting and our possessions will eventually fall apart. A man who is the sum of his circumstances is a man that is doomed to be frustrated and miserable. Jesus knew this about the heart of man and He was faithful in warning us from living like the world.

As we see here in Matthew 6:9-21, Jesus is warning His disciples from the treasures of the world while also giving them a greater way to live.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

What you love is where you find the things that you treasure and value the most. If we choose to love the things of this world, we are bound to be disappointed when they fail apart and fail to fulfill us. Yet, when we treasure God and His kingdom, that begins to create a hopeful change in us.

Do not waste your life trying to find your identity in what man has to offer. Rely on God.
