 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">Justice and Mercy, Not Fasting</div><div class="p"> 1In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev. 2The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek, together with their men, to entreat the Lord 3by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets, &#8220;Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: 5&#8220;Ask all the people of the land and the priests, &#8216;When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? 6And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves? 7Are these not the words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were at rest and prosperous, and the Negev and the western foothills were settled?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: 9&#8220;This is what the Lord Almighty said: &#8216;Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. 10Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears. 12They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,&#8217; says the Lord Almighty. 14&#8216;I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land they left behind them was so desolate that no one traveled through it. This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">The Lord Promises to Bless Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 1The word of the Lord Almighty came to me.</div><div class="p"> 2This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;I am very jealous for Zion; I am burning with jealousy for her.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3This is what the Lord says: &#8220;I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the Faithful City, and the mountain of the Lord Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each of them with cane in hand because of their age. 5The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;It may seem marvelous to the remnant of this people at that time, but will it seem marvelous to me?&#8221; declares the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 7This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;I will save my people from the countries of the east and the west. 8I will bring them back to live in Jerusalem; they will be my people, and I will be faithful and righteous to them as their God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Now hear these words, &#8216;Let your hands be strong so that the temple may be built.&#8217; This is also what the prophets said who were present when the foundation was laid for the house of the Lord Almighty. 10Before that time there were no wages for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor. 11But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as I did in the past,&#8221; declares the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of this people. 13Just as you, Judah and Israel, have been a curse#8:13 That is, your name has been used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, you have been regarded as under a curse. among the nations, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing.#8:13 Or and your name will be used in blessings (see Gen. 48:20); or and you will be seen as blessed Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Just as I had determined to bring disaster on you and showed no pity when your ancestors angered me,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, 15&#8220;so now I have determined to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid. 16These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; 17do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,&#8221; declares the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 18The word of the Lord Almighty came to me.</div><div class="p"> 19This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth and peace.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, 21and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, &#8216;Let us go at once to entreat the Lord and seek the Lord Almighty. I myself am going.&#8217; 22And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord Almighty and to entreat him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;In those days ten people from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, &#8216;Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">16</div><div class="p"> 1 &#8220;All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, &#8216;Where are you going?&#8217; 6Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.</div><div class="p"> 12 &#8220;I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Disciples&#8217; Grief Will Turn to Joy</div><div class="p"> 16Jesus went on to say, &#8220;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17At this, some of his disciples said to one another, &#8220;What does he mean by saying, &#8216;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,&#8217; and &#8216;Because I am going to the Father&#8217;?&#8221; 18They kept asking, &#8220;What does he mean by &#8216;a little while&#8217;? We don&#8217;t understand what he is saying.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, &#8220;Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, &#8216;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me&#8217;? 20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.</div><div class="p"> 25 &#8220;Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Then Jesus&#8217; disciples said, &#8220;Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31 &#8220;Do you now believe?&#8221; Jesus replied. 32&#8220;A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.&#8221;</div>
