Catechism: Desiring WholenessSample

Our culture celebrates independence. From the founding of our country to the achievements of entrepreneurs and Olympians, there’s nothing we love more than the tale of the hardworking hero who, against all odds, achieves success.
It makes a great story, but the implications can hurt: We start to believe that the pressure to achieve lies solely on us. We think that the only way to experience fulfillment and joy is to achieve it on an individual level; once we make ourselves attractive, fit, well-dressed, and wealthy, we’ll earn that sense of wholeness and belonging. And when we fall short, disappointment and shame can crush us.
Thankfully, God’s design for healing and wholeness isn’t about independence--it’s about interdependence. Only within the context of a community can we experience redemption from our brokenness and restoration into the people God made us be.
So what does it look like to live in a healthy community with other Christians? It’s radically different from the competitive, “in it to win it,” hustle culture our society pushes. Instead, God calls us to adopt the mindset of Christ: to love others genuinely and with true humility.

Reflection Questions:
- According to this passage, how should Christians interact with each other? Do you think our culture would describe Christians this way? Why or why not?
- Do you find yourself viewing others as people you compete with or people you cooperate with? What are some practical ways you can shift your mindset?
- Read and meditate on what Christ sacrificed for us. How does knowing Christ loved you sacrificially help you sacrificially love others? Who do you need to show that kind of love to in your family, school, and church? Ask God to help you adopt the mindset of Christ in your communities this week.
